Yo, Philly in the News

  • Due to the fact that owners and players were not able to resolve a long-standing labor dispute, the 2008 National Lacrosse League season was canceled yesterday. A spokeswoman for the Philadelphia Wings said its 5,000 season-ticket holders would receive full refunds and could expect a communication today.
  • A Scranton woman has been cited for disorderly conduct for shouting profanities at her overflowing toilet. Apparently she was yelling near an open window, and her neighbor (an off-duty police officer) overheard and asked her to stop. When she didn't, the neighbor called the cops. We can't help but feel sympathetic for the woman screaming at her toilet in this story, but then again, we don't live next to her; maybe she was getting a little out of hand.
  • Despite opposition from residents and politicians, the plan to put tolls on I-80 is moving forward. In fact, it sounds like now that the 50-year lease was signed late Monday, all that's needed to see the tolls in place by 2010 is permission from the Federal Highway Administration, which has already been applied for.
  • A preliminary hearing should take place today "in the case of the 16-year-old youth charged with killing another teenager in Tacony Creek Park last summer for his $3,000 dirt bike."
  • "The 12-year-old sister of one of the men charged with plotting to attack Fort Dix alleges that she was punched and choked during an apparent bias incident at her Cherry Hill school." According to the girl, a tall teenage boy grabbed her from behind in the hallway and choked her against a locker, calling her a terrorist and telling her, "Your brother is never going to come back."
  • The Daily News has coverage of an anti-gun violence rally that took place yesterday outside the State Office Building at Broad and Spring Garden streets.
