- UPDATE: A water main broke at about 5AM in front of the University of Pennsylvania's new Life Science Building, flooding the streets in three-foot deep rapids. The flow was stopped and the water has since subsided, but as of 7:30AM, University Avenue between 38th Street and Grays Ferry Avenue was closed while repair continued on the broken water main. Woodland Avenue is an alternate route. Ramps on and off I-76 at University Ave. were also closed, and you can imagine the amount of traffic that's causing.
- The Philadelphia Student Union is holding a rally tomorrow at 440 N. Broad at 4PM. "The specific aim is to proactively impact the way the school district deals with troubled schools, known as Corrective Action II Schools. More broadly however, PSU is pushing for educational equity across the state and school district."
- Seven shootings occurred over as many hours through early Sunday morning in Chester. Police believe the incidents were unrelated, but they did lead to the deaths of two women, and those deaths now appear to be connected to the death of a man found in the trunk of a car in Grays Ferry early yesterday.
- The governors of Pennsylvania and New Jersey will both be in Philadelphia today, speaking at unrelated events. Ed will be at the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority offices on Delaware Avenue, announcing the new chairman and talking about plans to expand the city's ports, while Corzine will be at the Kids Come First National Town Hall Meeting shortly after noon at the Hyatt Regency Philadelphia.
- A 14-year-old Chester County Boy Scout was attacked by a bear while on a trip to Hickory Run State Park this past weekend. He and the two youths he was with during the attack were treated and released. The bear was probably attracted by the smell of food left out, and ran away when people started yelling and screaming. Access to that part of the campground will be severely curtailed for the remainder of the season.
- The Inquirer has a bit more detail about the rather heated debate over the proper resting place of Edgar Allan Poe (a debate we mentioned a little while back), as well as a rather terrible poem about the whole thing.

And I'll be debating this whole Poe brouhaha on TV tomorrow morning (Wed Oct 17) on Comcast's Your Morning show on CN8 at 7:30 AM. I'll be taking on someone from Baltimore. Tune in. The Poe Wars continue.
Thanks, Ed! That's great to know.
