Yo, Philly in the News

  • Well, last night's Eagles game was an agonizing and embarrassing experience, but at least Philly sports fans have something to cheer about.
  • 61 people were admitted to Abington Memorial Hospital over the weekend after being exposed to fumes (probably carbon monoxide) at an eight-story Pavilion mini-mall on Old York Road in Jenkintown. Most of those people should be released today.
  • The president of Temple University is announcing a $500,000 Employee Home Ownership Program today which would provide employees with $4,000 to $5,000 in forgivable loans toward the purchase of single family homes in the areas surrounding the school's main campus in North Philadelphia and the health sciences campus in the Tioga section. The idea is that this will encourage "university employees to play a stronger role in the residential communities surrounding the university."
  • If you were wondering whatever happened with that whole thing about Rick's getting evicted from Reading Terminal Market, well, he's still there. Essentially there's no resolution imminent on the legal issues, so Rick's is just making steaks like he always does, and the Market management aren't trying to stop him.
  • Another SEPTA fare increase starts today! Oh, joy. The price of subway and bus tokens and transfers is going up another 15 cents, although the cash fare remains $2, and Regional Rail fares are also staying the same.
  • The 913th Airlift Wing, a tactical aircraft unit at Willow Grove Naval Air Station, was officially deactivated by the Air Force Reserve on Sunday. More than 1,000 of the 1,275 people with the unit have been placed elsewhere.
