Whiz of the Web: Friday Fried Onions

A steaming hot pile of our favorite things from around the internets.

  • Friend and former Phillyist Neil McGarry made his stand-up debut the other night at the Comedy Cabaret in Northeast Philadelphia, and the video, as videos do, made its way onto YouTube. We swear we're not just posting it because he's our friend, though; he's also very funny!
  • Joystiq has for us the events and the characters that will appear in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Woo hoo! Fencing!
  • Mega Man 3's introductory song, played on electric guitar. Rocking.
  • Baltimore, or The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire - an illustrated novel by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden - is heading to the silver screen, with the authors writing the screenplay and David Goyer directing. All we really had to hear was "Mignola" and we were already sold, but in case you want a plot synopsis: "Lord Henry Baltimore is bitten by a demonic vampire bat on a World War I battlefield. The plague destroys his family, and Baltimore creates a team to hunt and fight the Red King, the embodiment of all evil."
  • Another vampire book that's becoming a movie is Steven-Elliot Altman's Zen in the Art of Slaying Vampires. This one's also about a good vampire going to war against evil, and Russell Mulcahy will direct.
  • The latest in Star Trek casting rumors is that we are close to having a Kirk and a Scotty, and that Kirk will probably be Mike Vogel.

  • Remember how the appearance of the phrase "Metroid Dread" in Metroid Prime 3 got people thinking that the game originally called Metroid Dread might be back in production? Well, the official explanation for it now is that it was a "complete and utter coincidence."
  • Oh, man, Tokyo has retro gamer bars, too?! Why does it have to be so far away?
  • Scott Adams needs your help to save a joke! What's another word for "turd" that's just as funny?
  • Nerd World has an interesting article here about the "nerd culture gap." We think we agree with the final possibility he mentions - that nerds are becoming mainstream now. Actually, we'd take it one step further: it seems to us that nerds are the new cool. And we're totally okay with that.
  • The latest in all things Wes Anderson: Bill Murray will be re-teaming with the director, doing some voice acting for Anderson's upcoming stop-motion-animated film, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, which also has Goerge Clooney and Jason Schwartzman on board. Meanwhile, Cinematical has a review of Anderson's latest film, The Darjeeling Limited. Their conclusion seems to be that Anderson fans will like it, but your average mainstream audience will be bored and confused.
  • Zombies on a plane! That's all.
  • If you're not sure whether you want to see The Kingdom this weekend or not, you might want to watch the opening sequence online right now to help you decide. (Via)
  • Remember that auction that was being held for a cameo role in the next Will Ferrell movie? Well, it's over, and the winner purchased his walk-on part for $47,100.
  • The big kung fu epic starring both Jackie Chan and Jet Li - The Forbidden Kingdom - has finished filming and will now get some special effects added. The plot summary - "an American teenager is transported back to ancient China, where he learns about honor, loyalty and friendship, and the true meaning of Kung fu" - sounds pretty awful, but we can't help being excited about the movie that will finally put Chan and Li on the screen together. It's supposed to be released on April 18th of next year.
