We'd heard Matt Duke's name before (like when Phillyist Meghan's sister covered him for us), but this Phillyist's first encounter with the young Jersey-bred singer-songwriter was a few months ago at the WXPN-hosted Philly Local Lonely Hearts Club Band. Duke, in a pair of crazy patchwork-embellished stovepipe pants (each leg was probably wider than his whole body – you can kind of see them here), completely stole the stage with his performance of "When I'm 64." We left the World Cafe Live that night sure of two things: that we'd had an awesome time, and that we needed to see more of Matt Duke.
Tonight, we get our chance, as Duke co-headlines with Maryland's Eric Hutchinson downstairs at the World Café Live. Duke's music is great (his new-ish CD, Winter Child is full of beautiful, mostly low-key, guitar-driven rock, replete with great lyrics), and looking forward to watching him perform his tunes just as much as we're looking forward to listening, if not more so. He wasn't playing a guitar at the PLLHCB, so he was able to strut around in time to the music, but we're hoping that having his instrument won't hamper his performance style too, too much. Guess we'll have to wait until tonight to find out.

small bird. heh. isn't that a little emasculating?
Haha. Not when "One Small Bird" is the name of one of his songs.
