Yo, Philly in the News

  • A male and female student are hospitalized, the former in stable condition and the latter with serious injuries, after a shooting at around 1AM this morning at Delaware State University. The campus has been locked down and classes are cancelled for today as police search for the gunman.
  • Praxis released their preliminary recommendations on how to redevelop the face of the Delaware River at a community meeting yesterday. They suggest a public park every 200 feet, biking and jogging trails, restaurants, rowhomes, and shopping. (Via Jill)
  • The 12th Mid-Autumn Festival will be going down soon in Philadelphia's Chinatown section, and the Inquirer has a lengthy article on what to expect. Another holiday coming up soon (in fact, it starts tonight at sundown) is Yom Kippur, and the Inquirer is covering local preparations for that celebration as well.
  • Lobbyist and former news anchor Leslie Merrill McCombs is denying allegations by State Sen. Jeffrey Piccola and others that she used her personal relationship with Governor Rendell to help establish a $75 million tax credit for the film industry.
  • The Inquirer takes a look at yesterday's rallies in Philadelphia, and across the nation, in support of the six black teenagers in Jena, Louisiana who seem to be getting some unfair treatment from the justice system. The more details we read about this story the worse it becomes. There's a "white tree" that only white students can sit under? Someone hung nooses in the tree after some black students had the gall to sit there? And the black students are the ones being prosecuted? WTF? And speaking of issues of racism, check out this excellent opinion piece about the latest Donovan McNabb controversy (via Sarah).
  • DNA testing has revealed that an assault that occurred in Pennypack Park in Northeast Philadelphia last month was committed by the man known as the Fairmount Park rapist, who assaulted two women and raped and killed a third in 2003.
