Whiz of the Web: Friday Fried Onions

A steaming hot pile of our favorite things from around the internets.

  • A fascinating look at the evolution of cereal mascot Sugar Bear. (Via)
  • Jude Law says the script he's reading for his part in Repossession Mambo is "the most original and the coolest script I've ever read." He'll be co-starring in the "dark science-fiction thriller comedy" with Forest Whitaker. Sweet!
  • This upcoming film parodying epic superhero flicks called Superhero sounds like a good idea - until you realize it's being written by the same guy who wrote the third and fourth entries in the horrendous, unfunny Scary Movie series. But unfortunately Superhero has lurched one step closer to getting made, as they've now completed casting. Amongst the stars are Leslie Nielsen, Jeffrey Tambor, and Brent Spiner.
  • In a recent interview, George Lucas talked a bit more about the upcoming animated and live-action Star Wars TV series he's developing. We continue to look forward to them.
  • The Game|Life folks got to talk with the developers of Soul Calibur IV, and to watch them play the game. Here's what they learned.
  • If you didn't know, the Tokyo Game Show is going on at the moment, which is where a lot of these video game news updates are coming from. And guess what the TGS still has? Booth babes!
  • Taito's putting out a Paddle Controller peripheral for the DS so you can play their upcoming Arkanoid the way it was meant to be played: with an awkward dial! Seriously, though, we think this is pretty sweet.
  • Know what other classic arcade game is coming back for revenge on the DS, and which is also compatible with the new Paddle Controller? Space Invaders! The new title is called Space Invaders Extreme, and Game|Life gives it a great review; apparently they've mixed the classic alien-blasting with the colorful, high-speed, techno experience of games like Rez. We're so in.

  • Joystiq got a look at all three of those new Kingdom Hearts games we told you about yesterday.
  • More Guitar Hero III news! There's going to be a Sonic Youth track in the game, which is hot. They'll also be releasing a soundtrack album, which will include a code with which you can unlock three more songs for the game, via Xbox Live (so, we guess that's only for the Xbox 360 version).
  • Matt Damon had to drop out of Darren Aronofsky's next film, The Fighter, due to scheduling problems, but Brad Pitt has taken his place. The rather funny thing here, as Cinematical points out, is that Aronofsky had to stop production on The Fountain for a while to replace Brad Pitt when he dropped out of that movie due to scheduling conflicts.
  • The long-delayed sci-fi epic Southland Tales finally has a trailer, and this is it. The film looks very strange and surreal, and surprisingly goofy. We think it's either going to be absolutely fantastic, or a complete mess. We can't wait to see it! (Via)
  • The live-action JLA movie has a director, and it's George Miller. The main characters will probably be Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, and Aquaman, and Christian Bale and Brandon Routh will most likely not be involved. Oh, man... it'll be so easy to screw this one up, but we hope they don't.
  • Upcoming futuristic thriller Franklyn sounds pretty interesting. It's set simultaneously in the contemporary London we're familiar with, and a faith-dominated future metropolis without separation of church and state. The story: "four lost souls divided by two parallel worlds on course for an explosive collision when a single bullet will decide all their fates." It sounds uncomfortably like our most hated plot cliche of the moment - a group of otherwise unconnected individuals brought together by a single shattering event - but the parallel worlds gimmick keeps us interested. We'll see where this one goes. Btw, it will star Eva Green and Ryan Phillippe.
