Whiz of the Web: Friday Fried Onions

A steaming hot pile of our favorite things from around the internets.

  • Wired's got a photo gallery of cool cutting edge gadgets and technology. Good times! (Via Jill)
  • Here's an interesting little online video series for you: Bif Bam Pow Wow! It's a vlog sort of thing where a comic book store guy talks about and reviews movies, TV shows, comic books, and plenty of other geeky things. He's a good talker, and pretty amusing. Plus, he's already adding items to the list of comics we need to buy. That bastard... (Via Star)
  • It's been officially announced that we will indeed be getting Neo Geo games on the Wii's Virtual Console in the US, and some of the titles have even been released - we just don't know what date they'll show up yet. There's always something!
  • Robot Chicken does Zelda. Definitely stay through the whole thing for the final punchline. Ha!
  • Oh, Google! We thought you were supposed to be not evil! Why you gotta come down on the Chosen People?! Yep, they're filing a trademark suit against JewTube. C'mon, isn't parody fair use?
  • Thankfully, Google hasn't retreated entirely into malevolence... yet. They're currently offering a $30 million prize to any private firm that can land a robot rover on the moon before the end of 2012.
  • We've been wondering what the hell station they're playing these digitally remastered episodes of the original Star Trek series, and now Sci Fi Wire has finally linked to a handy list. Looks like the new season of these will be launching with a new version of "The Galileo Seven" this Sunday at 10AM on Philadelphia's WPSG. (Via)
  • The long-delayed sci-fi epic Southland Tales is apparently finally through the editing process and has a final running time of two hours and 24 minutes.

  • It seems like everybody's getting pretty pumped about the upcoming video game Rock Band - Wired especially! Game|Life has links to a big article about the game, plus three bonus features.
  • You can read an ecomic adaptation of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds on the Dark Horse website right now. The art, by D'Israeli, is totally freaking fantastic; the dialogue, by Ian Edginton, is wonderful; and of course, as you should know already, the story's not bad, either. (Via)
  • Good lord. There's tasteless, and then there's this. Just kind of takes the breath away, doesn't it?
  • Bah ha ha! Hilarious anti-piracy ad parody right here.
  • A book written by a protege of Dali (Stan Lauryssesn) and entitled Dali & I: The Surreal Story will be brought to the silver screen with Al Pacino as Dali (!) and Cillian Murphy as the protege. We are sold. It'll be directed by Andrew Niccol and shooting will start in Spain and New York at the beginning of next year.
  • As you may have heard by now, a strike may be coming to Hollywood which would affect the production of our beloved blockbuster films. In preparation, studios have begun fast-tracking their most important productions in the hopes of getting them as close to done as possible before everybody stops working. Cinematical has the list of which movies did get fast-tracked, which gives us an interesting glimpse into what the studios think are their big-ticket films.
  • A historical epic called Freedom Within the Heart (ugh, what a terrible title!) is on the way. It's about Brian Boru, the High King of Ireland who united the country in battle against a Viking threat. Leonardo DiCaprio will be playing Boru, and Vinnie Jones will be playing Boru's nemesis, Ivor of Limerick. Mark Mahon will be directing. Sounds cool! Except for that title of course.
  • Cinematical has for us Seven Great '80s Soundtrack Songs. Of course "Don't You Forget About Me" is right there, front and center, as it should be, along with plenty other favorites - and some other tunes that are pretty embarrassing. "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough"?!

Thanks for finding that list of Star Trek remastered stations. Last season WNBC had them and they were on Monday morning at some ungodly hour that nobody would watch. I of course stumbled upon it one flu-tastic night/morning when I was up feeling like crap.
I hate it when stations get shows just so some other station can't and they bury them like that.
