Yo, Philly in the News

  • CultureGrrl points out that the architects just selected to build the new home for the Barnes Foundation apparently had trouble keeping water from dripping down into one of their recent buildings: the American Folk Art Museum. D'oh.
  • 63-year-old retired policeman "Osvaldo Torres walked into the emergency room at Albert Einstein Medical Center yesterday morning, sat for a few moments, then went to a nearby restrooom and shot himself to death." A suicide note was found at the scene, but its contents have not been made public.
  • A 20-year-old man was found dead in his South Philadelphia apartment yesterday afternoon, after an argument with two young men that he apparently knew. They seem to have stabbed him to death with a sword, which was found, stained with blood, in a trash can nearby.
  • The Daily News has a little article about the various casino protests, counter-protests, and pro-casino events that have taken place recently. A member of Casino-Free Philadelphia says he was punched in the face at a picnic co-sponsored by the casino, but others at the picnic say the man had been screaming obscenities and shoving people, and actually threw the first punch himself. (As a side note, we're amused that Daily News reporter Chris Brennan actually refers to this incident as a "donnybrook.")
  • As was apparently expected by all concerned, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court issued a "rule to show cause" on Friday directing former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby Jr. to show why his license should not be temporarily suspended in the wake of his federal convictions. And in fact Libby's lawyer says "Scooter" will be suspended from practicing law while his appeal is pending.
  • A judge will render a verdict on Monday in the trial of a South Philadelphia man accused of murdering 189 seagulls. Daniel Gallagher, 50, drove into the seagulls on a lot at the Packer Marine Terminal on the night of Feb. 18, 2006 while he was rushing back to the office to finish some paperwork, and to use the bathroom. He says he was driving with his left hand and using a walkie-talkie with his right hand when his coffee cup started to tip over, and then all of the sudden there was a blanket of seagulls on his windshield. But the prosecutor says he went out of his way to hit the gulls, or at least showed a level of indifference that was criminal.
