What's new and/or interesting on TV this week.
What Perez Says About the VMAs (Tue, 9PM-10PM, VH1) - Everyone's favorite internet celebrity gossip master turns his wit upon MTV's Video Music Awards. Moving from the internet to TV seems like a backwards step to us. Although of course we wouldn't turn down the offer of a Phillyist TV show if somebody wanted to help us make one...
P.O.V. (Tue, 10PM-11:30PM, PBS [WHYY]) - The film being presented on this program Tuesday night is one that was screened during the Philadelphia Film Festival a year or so ago. It's The Camden 28, and it's a documentary about a 1971 incident wherein a group broke into the Camden, New Jersey draft-board office and shredded draft records.
Private Screenings (Thu, 8PM-9PM, TCM) - Norman Jewison has made some pretty great films, so this special, featuring a discussion with Jewison about his 50-plus-year career working in TV and film (with many clips, of course), should be pretty interesting.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (Thu, 10:30PM-11PM, FX) - In this episode, Mac, Dennis, and Dee all go to try out for the Philadelphia Eagles, only to discover that the brother of their archenemies, Doyle McPoyle, is also there, and the entire McPoyle clan has come along to cheer him on.
Heavyweights (Sat, 9PM-9:30PM, Food Network) - We already watch entirely too much Food Network, but here's another interesting new show that will be taking a look at food-industry rivalries between famous American brands. This first episode is focusing on the rivalry between Häagen-Dazs and Ben & Jerry's.
Highlander: The Source (Sat, 9PM-11PM, Sci-Fi) - Here it is! The direct-to-TV sequel to the last, extremely forgettable, Highlander movie, starring all of your favorites from the Highlander TV series: Adrian Paul as Duncan MacLeod, Peter Wingfield as Methos, and Jim Byrnes as Joe Dawson. The concept, if you don't know, is that a bunch of beings live among us who are immortal - unless you cut off their heads. They find themselves compelled to battle each other with swords. It's a fun, if rather odd, concept with a lot of potential that has resulted in pretty much only one good movie and some decent TV show episodes. But hey, you never know - this could be the second good movie! The plot of this one, btw, follows a group of immortals who set out to find the source of immortality.
