If you haven't already heard The National (MySpace), you should. We've been listening to their latest release, Boxer, and really enjoying it. It's low key, and a bit melancholy (especially the lyrics and the smooth, cool vocals, both courtesy Matt Berninger), but also lovely and quite rocking, with a more lush sound and more instrumentation than your average indie band, and a beat that this Phillyist is tapping his foot to as we speak. We're particularly fond of the first two tracks on the album: "Fake Empire" (the chorus - "We're half awake in a fake empire" - is a better description of America than we've heard in a long time) and "Mistaken for Strangers." But really there's not a bad track on the thing.
So, how do you check these guys out? By heading down to the Fillmore at the TLA on September 4th and seeing them play live, of course! Also performing will be the equally fantastic band, indie rock duo The Rosebuds, as well as Doveman. Even better, we can send one of you (and a friend) to this great show for free! Just fill out the form below before end of day this Sunday, September 2nd, and you could be that lucky fellow.
