Yo, Philly in the News

  • Andy Reid's son Britt pleaded guilty yesterday to four charges. His lawyers are arguing that he's full of remorse and are angling for him to get probation, but he could end up being sentenced to six to 14 months in jail. We won't know for sure until later this year.
  • The FBI is looking for a filthy dude in connection with the robbery yesterday of the Trumark Financial Credit Union at 1811 John F. Kennedy Blvd. He's a black man in his 30s "who was wearing sunglasses, a dirty gray suit jacket and dirty white sneakers." He got away with some cash - and a dye pack, which was later found exploded at a train concourse at 17th and JFK.
  • The Board of Licenses and Inspection Review are holding a hearing today at 1:15 p.m. to decide the fate of a mural entitled The Death of Venus which can be seen on the building at 410 S. 15th St. (and in this excellent photo, posted in our Photoist column last month) The owner of the building commissioned the mural in 2001, partially to dissuade graffitists from tagging the building. Officials at Peirce College didn't like the mural and have asked that it be destroyed because it's in a historic district without a permit.
  • It seems like we only just finished posting the news that School Reform Commission chairman James Nevels is quitting, and yesterday Governor Rendell already named his successor: Sandra Dungee Glenn, whom the Inquirer describes as "a Street appointee with strong connections to U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah."
  • A link dropped in the tips section of our Contribute page informs us that US Airways had to fire some baggage handlers at Philly International after discovering that they'd used managers' passwords to get into the system and log themselves for overtime that they never actually worked.
  • UPDATE: We just got a tip that M. Night Shyamalan is filming his new movie, The Happening, in town this week, with Mark Wahlberg. Apparently they're shooting in the North Waiting Room at 30th Street Station today. We might have more for you on this later... (Via Heather)
