Bluegrass Confessions: Part 1

krauss.jpgIt is true. We have a love of fiddle-playing, banjo-picking bluegrass music. (Not country - that's a whole different story.) This week, Philadelphia has the privilege of hosting two of bluegrass' biggest acts: Alison Krauss (tonight) and Nickel Creek (Saturday night). Alison Krauss is known for basically transforming bluegrass music back into popular music. It's no doubt you have heard her Grammy-nominated tunes on movies such as O, Brother Where Art Thou? or Cold Mountain. Krauss has won twenty Grammy Awards—more than any other female artist—and is tied for seventh-most winning among all artists.

Luckily for us, Krauss just released a collections album, 100 Miles or More: A Collection. It is sort of a greatest hits album, but instead of just slapping a bunch of old tracks on one CD and then selling for a ridiculous price, Krauss actually reworked several of her old tracks and included five new ones. She includes one of our favorites, "You Will Be My Ain' True Love" featuring Sting, as well as a new cover of the 1984 hit, "Missing You," with John Waite. There is just something classic yet exciting about her pure soprano voice and her talented band, Union Station. Really this show should not be missed - plus it's at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts, a perfect summer venue (the forecast is looking at 70 degrees tonight).
