What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.

stardust08-10-07.jpgLabyrinth - Woah! Here's a blast from the past. It's the 1986 classic wherein a young Jennifer Connelly has to travel into a weird fantasy world and face-off against a charming, well-hung, singing, dancing, evil David Bowie - not to mention a bunch of Jim Henson puppets - in order to save her kidnapped baby brother. Of course, it's ostensibly a kid's movie, so she has to learn important lessons about blah blah blah, but it's fun for adults, too, especially when you add in the nostalgia factor.

No End in Sight - This sounds like a pretty intense, informative, and interesting documentary telling the story of just how and why Iraq fell to pieces after the fall of Baghdad in 2003. It tells this story with the help of interviews with the people involved - American generals and soldiers, analysts, and Iraqi citizens. Sounds like a must-see film to us.

Most Likely to Suck: Daddy Day Camp - The sequel to Daddy Day Care stars Cuba Gooding Jr. instead of Eddie Murphy, and is directed by Fred Savage (yep, that guy). It's about a couple of fathers trying to keep their summer camp afloat, and seems to consist of a big pile of really dumb physical comedy. You'd have to pay us a lot of money to see this movie.

Rush Hour 3 - You know the formula by now, we assume: Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan play a mismatched duo of cops who engage in wacky slapstick comedy and kung fu fighting whilst solving crimes of some sort. This time, they're in Paris, trying to clean out the Chinese Triads. We were going to say this could be fun, but Rotten Tomatoes suggests otherwise.

Most Likely to Rule: Stardust - In this film adaptation of a book by Neil Gaiman, a boy travels to a magic fantasy world to catch a falling star, which he hopes will help him win the heart of his beloved. This one looks quite neat, and is loaded with talent: it stars Robert De Niro, Claire Danes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ricky Gervais, Sienna Miller, and Peter O'Toole, and was written for the screen and directed by Matthew Vaughn, the talented fellow who made Layer Cake, a film we enjoyed at the Philadelphia Film Festival. This looks great, and the reviews are excellent. We'd call it a good bet.

Personal Archive: Maysles Films, Inc. - Maysles Films has been going through their archives in order to catalog and preserve everything, and in the process they dug up some interesting little gems, which are going to be shown at the International House tonight and tomorrow night, beginning at 7PM. Tonight's program features a commercial directed by Andy Warhol, and a couple of fascinating documentaries. Saturday night focuses on the work of the Maysles brothers themselves, including the first film to come out of Maysles Films - a documentary about an American ballerina in the Bolshoi Ballet at the height of the Cold War. Next up is a humorous portrait of Salvador Dali, as well as a bunch of other interesting assorted bits of footage, outtakes, and surprises. Sounds like a great program for film geeks of all kinds.
