Whiz of the Web: Wednesday Whiz-Up

The best of the internet, squirted out in flavorful neon globules, just for you.

  • Heh. Here's a wrist band that, when you wear it, can sense the air guitar motions of your arms and responds by playing actual music. It's preprogrammed with some classic rock hits, but can also be hooked up to an MP3 player or speaker system for further musical fun.
  • Love using Google, but have paranoid delusions that they're actually poring over your search records and giggling? Well, use Scroogle instead! Scroogle accesses Google's DB for searches, but holds onto your search terms for only 48 hours, doesn't keep any cookies, and generates a random IP every time you use it. (Via)
  • Here's a lovely bit of self-referential internet wackiness: a dude who does cartoon versions of Wikipedia entries; an archive of his work is available at the Wikimedia Commons. (Via)
  • We aren't very interested in the film Superbad, but we have to admit, this clip is pretty damn funny. Beware, however; it is also RATED R. (Via)
  • Uh, don't tell anybody we told you, but here's a hack for tricking a CoinStar machine to not take the usual nine percent out of your cash, and instead give you all of it. (Via Jill)
  • Every time we think we're finally done with this year's Comic-Con, another post pops up about it. But we think we may finally be able to put the thing to bed after linking to Cinematical's wrap-up post, complete with a giant photo gallery, and this amusing web comic (via), which is so full of sci-fi and geek references that the mind nearly shatters.

  • Some Star Trek XI casting news: it's rumored that J.J. Abrams wants to bring Tom Cruise in for a cameo as Captain Christopher Pike. Meanwhile, Anton Yelchin (a real, actual Russian!) is in negotiations to play Chekhov.
  • Joan Allen is going to be in Death Race?! But... but... she's a real actor!
  • Warner Brothers is fast-tracking a Speed Racer video game for the Wii and DS so it can come out on the same day as the film (May 9, 2008). The PS2 version will come out in time for the DVD release in fall 2008. So... they're speeding up the development of a movie-based game, which is already a genre that is notoriously shoddily made? Yeah, that's going to make for some great entertainment.
  • The rather odd trailer for Geometry Wars: Galaxies can be found embedded here, complete with "Particle Man" soundtrack. We still don't get They Might Be Giants, but the game looks pretty cool.
  • Go here before this Friday (August 10) and you can place your vote for the title of the sequel to F.E.A.R. None of the choices are really all that great, but at least they're all better than F.E.A.R. (Via)
  • Married to the Sea takes on the issue of illegal immigration with predictably hilarious results in this fine web comic.
  • So what the heck did ended up getting announced on Apple Day yesterday? A new iMac, that's what! It's got a shiny, super-thin keyboard, too, which would be really cool if it weren't for the fact that it's missing a bunch of keys. Silly Apple. Always throwing away functionality in favor of simplicity and style. (Oh, man, we are so going to get burned for saying that.)
  • Okay, no. This is NOT an acceptable representation of Galactus, the devourer of worlds. No, no, no.
  • The sci-fi movie Jumper has a new website, but don't worry, there's no need to actually go there yourself, because The Movie Blog has already been, and they've returned with all the info you need.
  • The Movie Blog also dug up a line-up of Marvel's current and upcoming movie, cartoon, and live stage projects. Good stuff! And speaking of Marvel movies, here are some more details about Wolverine.
  • Woah, this is one crazy hack. Dude managed to figure out a way to play the Xbox 360 using a Wii Remote. It involved connecting the Wii Remote via Bluetooth to a PC running custom firmware, which was connected to another box running firmware emulating a PS2 controller, which was connected to a PS2 to 360 adapter, which was connected to the Xbox 360. Whew!
  • A TIME magazine interview with Ben Kingsley included a painfully direct question, submitted by a reader, which many of us have wondered the answer to: just why the hell did he accept a role in Bloodrayne? Kingsley's answer sounds pretty honest, too; basically, he just jumped at the chance to finally play a vampire.
