What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.

sunshine07-27-07.jpgThe Boss of It All - A comedy about working in an office by... Lars von Trier?! It seems impossible, but here it is. This film was at the Philadelphia Film Festival; you can read our reviews of the film here, here, and here.

Vitus - The story of a child genius who also happens to be a piano prodigy. His parents encourage him to develop his amazing musical ability, but he's more interested in aviation and tinkering in his grandfather's workshop. Their dreams for him and his own dreams for himself eventually come to a head. Sounds like a pretty typical family drama story, but it could be good.

My Best Friend - A middle-aged antique dealer discovers that the people he thought were his best friends all despise him. One of them makes him a bet: if he can produce a real best friend, he can keep a massive Greek vase he purchased on company money. Otherwise, no. Thus begins a frantic search for a best friend, aided by lessons in friendship from a chatty and big-hearted, but low-brow, cabbie (who we're betting will turn out to be the best friend in the end). Anyway, this one sounds like it could be fun.

Most Likely to Suck: No Reservations - Ugh. We couldn't be less interested in this by-the-numbers romantic comedy. Catherine Zeta-Jones plays a tough, no-nonsense master chef at an upscale restaurant who rules with an iron fist and has no time for a personal life. But of course everything changes when a brash young sous chef (Aaron Eckhart) with a casual, laughing approach to everything begins work in the kitchen. They start out at odds, but end up in bed together, yada yada yada. Oh, and the filmmakers have even thrown in the "main character gets a kid thrown into her lap unexpectedly" angle. Essentially this is just a series of cliches fit together like cogs into a machine to make you spend money.

Most Likely to Rule: Sunshine - This is one we've been looking forward to for a while: Danny Boyle's sci-fi epic about the last ditch effort by a crew of eight men and women to save our planet by jump-starting the dying sun. Their mission encounters unexpected difficulties on the way, leaving the crew fighting for their lives and their sanity. The film stars Cillian Murphy, Michelle Yeoh, Hiroyuki Sanada, Chris Evans, and Rose Byrne. Although the plot reminds us vaguely, and rather uncomfortably, of The Core, there's a lot more talent involved in this film, and the reviews are good. Looks like a solid bet to us!

I Know Who Killed Me - It's the "Lindsay Lohan plays a stripper" movie! And now that we've finally gotten around to reading the plot synopsis, it actually sounds vaguely intriguing. Lohan plays a woman named Aubrey who's abducted by a serial killer but miraculously escapes - though not without losing a hand, a leg, and plenty of blood. But now she thinks she's a completely different person named Dakota, and that Aubrey is still in the hands of the serial killer. The film also stars Julia Ormond. The question is, is this a serious psychological thriller, or is it another Saw rip-off starring the latest vacant, drunken, pretty girl of the moment? We can't say for sure, but Rotten Tomatoes has no score up yet as of this writing, which doesn't bode well...

The Simpsons Movie - At long last, the great animated TV comedy series gets a movie. Of course, we'd be more excited about it if it were coming out about ten years ago, and if the ads were funny at all. But the reviews are generally good, and after all, c'mon. It's a Simpsons movie! How can you not go see it?

Who's Your Caddy? - In this horrifically titled golfing comedy, rapper Big Boi plays a version of himself called C-Note who leverages his way into the super stuffy golf and country club by buying the land adjacent to the 17th hole. Of course the leadership attempts to kick him out, but he fights the establishment in defense of his own and his family's honor. Inevitably one of his stuffy enemies is played by Jeffrey Jones, who's been playing that same part since around 1980. It's hard to imagine this film being any good, especially since it also, like I Know Who Killed Me, doesn't have enough reviews yet to get a score on Rotten Tomatoes. But hey, you never know; it could be fun.

Beyond Leone - Lost Spaghetti Western Classics - We mentioned this double feature program yesterday. It continues tonight and tomorrow night. These are rare, hard to find films, so you might want to take the time to check them out.
