If your lasting memory of Silverchair is the Cobain-lite bombast of the “Tomorrow” video on MTV—we still heart you, Tabitha Soren—you’ve missed out on some fine tunes over the years. But you can catch up Saturday night when their headlining tour comes to our fair city.
The Australian trio burst onto the scene as teens and scored a hit with its debut, Frogstomp. Each successive album got a little better, culminating in the cult hit Diorama, which punched Silverchair’s ticket as a serious rock band. It became that rare rock 'n roll creature, a la Pearl Jam: a band whose fan base thrives amid waning airplay and press.
Five years later, after enduring health problems and the shifting tastes of music fans, the band returns with Young Modern, which layers the lush instrumentation and melody of Diorama with a simpler indie rock spirit. In an interview with Blender, frontman Daniel Johns said: "I think this record is easily our strongest record as a whole. It's the first time in our careers that we've really embraced and accepted every facet of what we know we're good at and what we know we probably shouldn't do. And as a songwriter, this is the first time I haven't sat down and thought, What kind of record am I going to write? I decided to be inspired by everything."
Keep an ear out, especially, for "Straight Lines," "If You Keep Losing," and "Young Modern Station," which you can hear here. If the songs sound half as good live, attending the show will be worth it. If nothing else, do it to reconnect with the 1995 you.
