What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.

thing07-20-07.jpgBlack Sheep - Thought they'd already made a "scary animal" horror movie for every animal in the animal kingdom? Well, you were wrong there, mister! Behold, evil sheep! A guy scared of sheep comes back to the family farm only to discover that his brother is doing genetic experiments on the sheep. When one of the mutant lambs is released by animal activists, suddenly thousands of sheep are turned into bloodthirsty predators! Genius! How could this not be hilariously fantastic?

Cashback - After getting dumped by his girlfriend, a guy gets insomnia and decides to make the best of it and take the nightshift at a supermarket, where he meets a bunch of wacky characters including, inevitably, a nice young lady. He's tempted to give way entirely to dreaming, escapism, and the belief that he has the ability to stop time (woah!), but the lady gives him a reason to remain tied to reality. Sounds neat!

Goya's Ghosts - It's a sweeping historical epic about the famous Spanish painter, set at the end of the Spanish Inquisition and the start of the invasion of Spain by Napoleon's army. The fantastically talented Stellan Skarsgard plays Goya himself, while Javier Bardem plays a member of the Inquisition who falls for Goya's teenage muse, who's played by Natalie Portman. It could be good!

Hairspray - Yep, it's that remake where John Travolta plays a big fat woman. Expect our review a little later on this morning.

Most Likely to Suck: I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry - Ugh. This is the offensively stupid comedy in which Adam Sandler and that King of Queens guy (Kevin James) play firefighters who pretend to be gay and get married so they can get domestic partnership benefits. So, in other words, lots of awful gay jokes in the guise of being supportive of gay culture. DO NOT WANT.

Most Likely to Rule: John Carpenter Triple Feature - Exhumed Films has done it again. They've picked out three of our favorite Carpenter films - The Thing, Prince of Darkness, and Escape from New York - and slammed them together into a monster triple feature. The Thing is a re-adaptation of a short story which first came to film in the form of one of the great black-and-white sci-fi classics (The Thing from Another World). Carpenter made a film perhaps as good as the original, full of paranoia, evil aliens, and crazily, disgustingly awesome special effects. Prince of Darkness, meanwhile, is a very odd and interesting film in which a bunch of guys find Satan in a glass tube in the basement. Escape from New York, of course, is the famous cult film starring Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, a criminal and a bastard who's released in order to rescue the president from an incredibly dangerous post-apocalyptic New York City. Also keep an eye out for Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, and Isaac Hayes.
Showing at: The International House, on Sat @ 8PM ONLY
