Yo, Philly in the News

  • Prosecutors in the Fort Dix Six case have requested that the jury be allowed to remain anonymous. The defense is still trying to decide how to respond, but the judge may consider the request today.
  • U. Penn's Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital may have been the first to give a snake high-energy radiation therapy yesterday when they treated a 61/2-foot anaconda's tumor. The snake, btw, is Sir Mix-A-Lot from Wilmington's Brandywine Zoo.
  • Three double shootings which took place last night and early this morning in Philadelphia have left two men and a 15-year-old boy dead, and two other men in critical condition.
  • A fight is now brewing between the Reading Terminal Market management and the Reading Terminal Merchants' Association over the management's plan to oust Rick’s Philly Steaks. The Merchants' Association "unanimously approved a resolution yesterday supporting a new lease for veteran steak sandwich maker Rick Olivieri." But it sounds like the board isn't budging, and Olivieri's lawyer is threatening litigation if the dispute is not resolved.
  • More weird information is coming out about the pizza delivery man bank robbery, now that arrests are being made. The woman accused of being the ringleader behind the plot (and who is now in prison for killing her boyfriend) apparently cooked it up so she could get the money to hire a hitman to kill her father. Her father is not surprised by all this, and says, "I don't think she's completely sane." Meanwhile, prosecutors say the pizza man who was killed by the bomb around his neck may have had a limited part in the planning of the robbery, before perhaps becoming an unwilling participant.
  • It's not strictly Philly news, but we're sure you want to know that Miss New Jersey is going to keep her crown, despite some blackmail photographs of her doing "unladylike" things. Miss New Jersey herself decided to release said photographs on NBC's Today yesterday morning, and now, of course, they're online.
