What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.
Broken English - This romantic comedy by first-time writer/director Zoe Cassavetes, and starring Parker Posey and Gena Rowlands, already hit Philly a while back during the Film Festival; you can read our review right here.

Brooklyn Rules - The story of three life long friends set against the backdrop of mobster John Gotti's rise to power in the '80s. It stars Freddie Prinze Jr., Mena Suvari, and Alec Baldwin. The reviews are generally pretty good, so it could be okay.

Joshua - The latest entry in the genre of creepy kid films, this one's about a precocious piano-playing child prodigy who goes from just kind of odd to seriously weird and possibly homicidally dangerous after his parents come home with a newborn baby sister. There's actually far fewer bad reviews of this one than you might think. It could be good!

Lady Chatterley - Another film adaptation (this one by the French) of D.H. Lawrence's famous novel about a young woman in an empty marriage with a paralyzed man many years her senior who finds satisfaction in the arms of the manly groundskeeper. It's 76% fresh at the moment, so it should be a pretty good bet.

Most Likely to Rule: Rescue Dawn - Werner Herzog's dramatic film adaptation of his own documentary about Dieter Dengler, a German who became a pilot for the United States during Vietnam. He was shot down shortly into his first mission and captured by the Vietcong. He then suffered horrible torture at their hands before escaping, only to sufer even worse in the jungle. Yeah, Herzog doesn't exactly tell the happy fun stories. But he does make a damn fine film, and with damn fine actor Christian Bale played Dengler, there's an excellent chance that this is an excellent movie!

Introducing the Dwights (AKA Clubland) - In this Australian film, Brenda Blethyn plays an aging comedienne and single mother of two who is afraid that the girl her son meets will break up their unorthodox little family. No doubt much wackiness will ensue, and eventually the mother will let the boy follow his heart, blah blah blah. Can't say we're at all interested in this one.

Talk to Me - It's another true-life drama, this one about Ralph Waldo “Petey” Greene Jr. (Don Cheadle), an ex-con who talks his way into an on-air radio gig during the mid-to-late '60s and, with his controversial style, biting humor, and social commentary, becomes an iconic radio personality. The film also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mike Epps, Cedric The Entertainer, and Martin Sheen. It looks funny and interesting, and a good bet for entertainment this weekend.

Most Likely to Suck: Two or Three Things I Know About Her - As part of their 5th Annual Bastille Day Celebration, the I-House is screening this 1966 film from famous French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard. The film is about "an actress in a film and a housewife from the Paris suburbs who turns tricks in the city once a month to make ends meet," both of whom are apparently the same person. But of course, it's not just about that; it's also about Paris itself (or herself), and it's about Vietnam, and consumer society, and existential angst. And can we tell you how little we care? We're betting this film is a good example of everything that's bad about avant garde film, but hey, we could be wrong.
Showing at: International House, Sat @ 7PM ONLY
