- Late last night Governor Rendell made a deal with top lawmakers that ended the budget standoff and the partial shutdown of state government.
- The Daily News has a run-down of some of the crime that occurred in the city this past weekend, and it includes a story about a potential burglar getting his head caught in a trapdoor and suffocating to death while trying to rob a bar. In other crime news, a man followed up a bungled attempt to rob the PNC Bank on 19th near Chestnut last Thursday morning with a more successful robbery of the TD Banknorth on Chestnut near 5th some 75 minutes later.
- As Joe Ross mentioned in a comment on yesterday's news post, more detailed information has come out about that shooting in South Philly Sunday night. Apparently as many as 85 rounds were fired, and the graze wounds suffered by two cops were from friendly fire. Residents and police had been trying to coax a confused man into dropping his gun when it seems that one policeman opened fire, which spooked the other cops into firing themselves, perhaps under the impression that they were being fired upon. The shooting is under investigation, some officers will be retrained, and the department is going to take a look at weapons training overall.
- Governor Rendell signed a law yesterday to allow women to breast-feed in public in Pennsylvania.
- Yesterday was the hottest day of the summer so far, and today temperatures should get into the mid-90s again, which means we're in the first heat wave of the season. Also, an excessive heat warning is still in effect, so be careful out there. Thankfully the hot weather should break late tomorrow or Thursday.
