Whiz of the Web: Monday Meat Slices

The best of the internet, chopped into tiny bits and grilled for your enjoyment.

  • TV Guide has a list of the Top 30 Cult Shows Ever. Most of our favorite TV shows ever ended up on there, so we're pretty pleased.
  • Shaft is in Speed Racer! By which we mean, Richard Roundtree has been cast in the upcoming movie. Sweet.
  • Sci Fi Wire has a few more details about the upcoming Sci Fi Channel miniseries, Tin Man. Could be corny, could be cool; we'll just have to wait and see.
  • Science has already told us that gaming can be good for us, but now that Playboy agrees, there is clearly no question that it is a true fact.
  • What if Nintendo had made a sex ed video? We think it would go something... like this. Some of the dialogue and diagrams, as you might expect, are not entirely safe for work. (Via)
  • Well, at least Uwe Boll is modest; he says his latest film, Postal, is just "one of the funniest and the most important films of the last decade," and also that "It’s one of the best films of all time!" Apparently these claims are based on the fact that it got standing ovations at Cannes. Supposedly. The guy could just be delusional.
  • Scott Adams prepares us for the 2008 elections by explaining how to pick a president.
  • Time for the hands-on iPhone reviews to start pouring in. Here's TIME's. Sounds like he's impressed, but he thinks later versions will be better, which sounds about right. (Via)

  • Chris's Invincible Super-Blog isn't all about comics; sometimes Mr. Sims reviews movies. Here's his review of a movie in which a high school girl fights crime with a giant metal yo-yo. God bless Japan!
  • The Nintendo DS has become a learning platform for all kinds of random subjects. The latest thing it can teach you is how to do origami.
  • Check out this freaking hilarious critique of Spider-Man 3, which takes the form of a fake commercial for a set of Spider-Man 3 action figures. Don't worry, it's quite funny even if you haven't seen the movie yet.
  • Apparently some personalities from the Nintendo universe will appear in Smash Bros. Brawl, not as playable characters, but as little buddies that pop out of item balls and help you out. Three of these assistants will be a Nintendog, one of the Hammer Bros., and Samurai Goro from F-Zero.
  • Here's what appears to be the first photo of Indiana Jones & son from the set of the new movie. That's Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf, for those of you not keeping up. (Via)
  • When we went to see the Transformers preview screening last week, there was a mighty intriguing and enigmatic trailer shown in front of the film. We won't bother describing it, as Cinematical has already done a fine job; suffice it to say, it was a neat-looking movie, J. J. Abrams was clearly involved, and no title was given. We searched IMDB for further information with no success, but Cinematical reveals that this is the rumored Cloverfield project, once thought to be Dark Tower: The Movie, but now understood to be a monster movie of some kind. Regardless, we're excited about it.
  • Cinematical has news of a bunch of unwelcome sequels on the way, including Transformers 2, Fantastic Four 3, and TMNT 2. Ugh.
  • Check out some posters for the upcoming film of Beowulf. We've seen at least one really bad film adaptation of the epic poem in the past, but this one is looking pretty impressive, with direction by Robert Zemeckis, a script by Neil Gaiman, and a cast that includes Angelina Jolie, Ray Winstone as Beowulf, Robin Wright Penn, John Malkovich, Anthony Hopkins, and Crispin Glover as Grendel. Although the posters give it the look of a live action film, it's supposedly animated, and will be coming out in November. We're looking forward to it.
  • We remember reading (and posting!) rumors before that Matt Damon would play Kirk, Adrien Brody would play Spock, and Gary Sinise would play Bones in the upcoming Star Trek prequel. Now those rumors are back again, but they're being posted by TV Guide and look slightly more official. We really like this casting, so we hope it turns out to be true...
  • "Mommy, what are those two Transformers doing?!" Thankfully, this is a scene that does not appear in the new movie, although we wouldn't put it past Bay to include it in the sequel.
