But Will There Be a Seed-Spitting Contest?

watermelon.jpgIt's drawing close to the day when all Phillyists must decide what to do with a day off in the sweltering heat - the Fourth of July. Do we hang around the city, deal with the onslaught of tourists dressed up in their red, white and blue best to sit on the parkway and listen to Hall and Oates? Do we sit around drinking beer and grilling burgers and dogs? Do we venture into the suburbs to try to find some kind of quaint American celebration?

Well, if it's the latter, we have the event for you. Fonthill Museum (in scenic Doylestown) is hosting an Old-Fashioned Fourth of July celebration on the Fourth from noon to 5 p.m. They've planned a whole afternoon of it - a decorated bike parade (children should bring their bikes decorated in red, white and blue for the Parade of Patriotism, which starts at 12:30. There are prizes!), wagon rides, sack races, picnic foods and... wait for it... a watermelon-eating contest. (We don't know about you, but we are down with anything that involves gorging yourself on watermelon.)

Because it's at the Museum, they're also offering turn-of-the-century games, such as town ball, stilt walking, a bucket brigade relay, wheelbarrow races and tug-of-war.

So basically what we're telling you is that there are wheelbarrow races and all the watermelon you can stuff your face with. What's not to love?

Admission to the celebration is $3 for adults and $1 for children from ages 5 through 17. For more information, call the museum (located at Route 313 and East Court Street in Doylestown), at 215-348-9461, ext. 10.
