Yo, Philly in the News

  • A suspect wanted in the shooting of a New York commune leader more than a year ago was captured as she stepped off the Market-Frankford El in West Philly yesterday.
  • The Inquirer's got the coverage of last night's presentation of the 86th annual Philadelphia Award to Leonore Annenberg.
  • The lawyer for one of the group that we're apparently now calling the Fort Dix Six asked that the court reconsider its decision to hold him without bail. In response, the prosecutors filed a brief that pointed out some disturbing graffiti that the suspect has scratched onto the walls of his cell, which "included an AK-47 assault rifle firing bullets at the letters 'FBI.'" Hmm... not exactly helping your case there, buddy!
  • The Academy of Music's great chandelier (pictured here) has been taken down and disassembled and in a few days will be sent to a town in the south of France to be restored. It should be returned and rehoisted in about 13 months.
  • On the occasion of the Comcast Center getting its top put on, the Inquirer takes a look at the state of office space and comes to the conclusion that things are looking up. Office vacancy rates have fallen and rents have stopped plunging downward. The Comcast Center itself is already 96 percent leased.
  • And speaking of the topping off ceremony, our friend HughE has some cool photos of it, and we'll also have links to more in a later post this morning. We're pretty excited that William Penn's going to be looking out from the tallest point in the city again! Maybe we can start winning some championships now...
