Phillyist has a problem with school, specifically that we can't stop going. We're fortunate in that regard, as our current gig allows for free college classes, which we take with impunity. But we also realize we were lucky to have the resources to obtain a decent education, and the related accoutrement, in the first place.
Books Through Bars is a local organization dedicated to getting educational materials and programming to those who are incarcerated. Founded in the late '80s, BTB sent out over 10,000 packs of books to self-educating prisoners last year, along with many other impressive accomplishments. The organization's mission - "to reverse the dehumanizing effects excessive punishment inflicts upon individuals, families and communities" - is accomplished both by supporting the educational needs of prisoners and supporting programs in the community with the goal of inspiring creative dialogue about our criminal justice system.
There are many opportunities to become involved, both in terms of activities and time slots. There is book-packing of course, along with office help and delivering the goods. You can contact their volunteer department to join up; if you're interested in making donations of books or funds, drop them a line here. While you're at it, print off a few of their volunteer flyers and post around town. Your inner librarian will thank you.
