Having grown up Catholic, this Phillyist's early experience with bingo (besides the dog song, of course) consisted of the school gym being converted every other Wednesday afternoon into a downmarket The Price Is Right (if The Price Is Right had legions of older folk sitting at long folding tables littered with markers, enough bingo cards to paper said tables, and ashtrays. And if Bob Barker was a priest). It was not really appealing so much as darkly fascinating, but still none of us sat around dreaming of the day when we'd have markers of our own.
Upon moving to Philly, we realized the old folk had it all wrong. While we're sure the basement of the Cardinal Bevilacqua Community Center sees some number-calling (if no longer smoky) action, the place to get your bingo on is without question the monthly GayBINGO hosted by AIDS Fund Philadelphia. The fabulous-ness takes place at the Gershman Y this Saturday at 7, but from our limited experience showing up with some time to spare is advisable. This month the theme is 80s Prom, and you are fully expected to dress for the occasion; organizers suggest taffeta gowns and skinny ties, with some serious hair poofing of course. You can get your reserved tickets now by calling 215-731-9255, or by stopping by the office at 1315 Spruce Street, 4th floor, during normal business hours. Proceeds benefit the Fund, but don't worry: you're not bingoing out of the goodness of your heart only. Prizes range from $100-$1000, which will keep you in legwarmers for years to come.
