Philadelphia-born and internationally acclaimed musician Teddy Pendergrass has been working in the music industry since 1968, performing as both a drummer and singer. In 1976, he started his career as a solo artist and became the first black male singer to record five multi-platinum albums in a row.
In 1982, Pendergrass was in an accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. The following year, he began recording again, and in 1985, he returned to the stage by performing for Live-Aid. 1997 marked his return to touring with his role in the gospel musical Your Arms Too Short to Box With God, and he has been recording and performing ever since.
Having suffered a spinal cord injury of his own, Pendergrass formed the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance "to help provide education and occupational opportunities to people with [spinal cord injuries]." This June, the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance will present Teddy 25: A Celebration of Life, Hope and Possibilities. The event will be hosted by Mo'Nique, and will feature performances and appearances by such artists as Patti LaBelle, Bill Cosby, Stephanie Mills, Philadanco, and Pendergrass himself. The event will honor many individuals as well, including Whitney Houston, Arsenio Hall, Bob Krasnow and Vivian Green. It will also feature a variety of surprise performances. Tickets are going quickly, and this is an event featuring tons of prominent entertainers from Philadelphia, so get your tickets now!
