What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend
Paris Je T'Aime - A love letter to the city of love, taking the form of a series of vignettes that tell stories of unusual encounters in the various neighborhoods of the city, each directed by a different famous director (including the Coen Brothers, Gus Van Sant, Wes Craven, and Walter Salles) and starring a different team of famous stars (including Natalie Portman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Elijah Wood, Nick Nolte, Bob Hoskins, Juliette Binoche, Rufus Sewell, Gena Rowlands, Miranda Richardson, and Steve Buscemi). That actually sounds pretty neat!

Bug - Ashley Judd plays a waitress hiding out in a hotel from her abusive husband who starts to feel hopeful about life again after she begins a romance with an eccentric, nervous drifter played by Michael Shannon. But then come... the bugs!!! The summary says the film "is an intense, mind-bending psychological thriller in which nothing is quite as it seems," so we guess you're supposed to be wondering the whole time whether the couple is really infected by evil alien parasites, or they're just crazy. Or something like that. Hmm. Could be good...

Most Likely to Suck: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - We're pretty sure this is one of the main reasons so few other movies are coming out this weekend. Everybody just assumes the third Pirates movie is going to run away with the box office and crush all-comers. Which is probably true! Anyways, in this one Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) ally with the evil Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) to save Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) from Davy Jones' Locker. Meanwhile there's the the Flying Dutchman and Davy Jones himself to contend with, as well as the Chinese pirate Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat). And then of course everybody ends up at the ends of the Earth in a huge titanic battle. You know, like you do. Sounds like fun! Still, given its contenders this weekend, and its score on Rotten Tomatoes, we gotta give it the big suck.

Most Likely to Rule: Alejandro Jodorowsky Double Feature - Ah, the infamous Jodorowsky. You never know what's going to happen in a Jodorowsky film, except that it'll probably be crazy and disturbing. First up is El Topo, a surreal Western featuring a master gunfighter and cosmic mystic (played by Jodorowsky himself) versus four sharp-shooters. John Lennon liked it, so how can it be bad? Next is The Holy Mountain, wherein The Alchemist (Jodorowsky again) calls together "a diverse group of disciples from every culture and corner of the galaxy to embark with him on a journey to the Holy Mountain, where together they will try to unseat the immortal beings who secretly rule the universe." Wow. That sounds awesome. The summary concludes: "The extraordinary re-enactment of the 'Conquest of Mexico' featuring a cast of toads and lizards is alone worth the price of admission."
