- The US Department of Health and Human Services is using Shrek as a spokseman for an anti-obesity drive, but "the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood says the soon-to-open Shrek the Third sequel movie has too many promotional ties with unhealthy foods to justify using Shrek as a health advocate."
- Kirsten Dunst will be directing a short film as "part of Glamour magazine's "Reel Moments" series of short films by women, based on stories submitted in letters by the magazine's readers." She'll also star in the film, which is a ghost story inspired by classic horror movies.
- New Line has been developing a remake of Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin's classic comedy All of Me for two years, and have just signed Queen Latifah to star, we assume in the Tomlin role, although that's not entirely clear.
- MIT researchers are putting together a holographic video system that would be compatible with PCs and gaming consoles, and relatively inexpensive. The version they have now can only make images as large as a baseball, but they're already working on another version that would put out images the size of your average computer monitor. Intriguing...
- There will be two different versions of the Transformers DS game: Transformers: Autobots and Transformers: Decepticons. Is it a trick to make you buy more games, or actually cool, customized content? Only time will tell.
- There's apparently a crazy weekly Tuesday night Guitar Hero party at Pianos in NYC's lower East side. Anybody know of anything like that around here?
- One way to get a DS or Wii is to collect enormous numbers of Coke rewards points. Apparently the program ran out of Nintendo merchandise four days after it started, but the DS and Wii have reappeared on the website, so maybe keep trying? Keep in mind, you'll need to get a looooooooot of Coke to get your console.
- Are virtual worlds the worlds of the future?? They appear to be growing in popularity, anyway.
- The patent infringement case against Vonage could end up having a big impact on the entire internet telephony industry. If that's the only phone you've got, you might want to think about getting a back-up...
- Heh. SEPTA conductors tell it like it is.
- U. of Tokyo researchers set a new internet speed record on Internet2 this week when they managed to send data at a rate of 9.08Gbps. Holy crud! When can we get our hands on that kind of speed??
- The Movie Blog got to visit the set of Midnight Meat Train, that subway serial killer movie by Ryuhei Kitamura. Most important revelation: Leslie Bibb is ridiculously hot.
- They're making a sequel to the 1931 Bela Lugosi Dracula called Un-Dead, and it's now rumored to star Javier Bardem as Dracula, Monica Bellucci as Lucy, and John Hurt as Professor Van Helsing. We don't know about you, but we think that sounds awesome.
