Yo, Philly in the News

  • It's definitely a big deal that the US Supreme Court has upheld a federal ban on partial-birth abortions. But the Inquirer is pointing out that the decision will actually have little impact on policies in Pennsylvania and New Jersey - because PA "already has one of the nation's most restrictive abortion laws," and "Gov. Rendell, a supporter of abortion rights, would likely veto any new efforts to further restrict abortions."
  • Some fool has robbed the same Wawa in the Northeast (on Torresdale Avenue at Levick Street in Tacony) three times within the past month. The police would like you to call 215-686-3153 or -3154 if you have any information.
  • The effects of that recent nor'easter are still being felt, especially in our neighboring state. Acting Governor Richard Codey has formally requested that the President declare New Jersey a federal disaster area. We'll resist making the obvious joke at poor Jersey's expense...
  • Speaking of NJ, they're having transit woes just like us. NJ Transit has just approved a fare hike of nearly 10% to help close its deficit of almost $60 million.
