Philadelphia: Now With One Fewer Jazz Club

Earlier today, we received an email from a sender whose name we didn't recognize, with the rather cryptic subject: "The End of An Era. Thanks for the Memories." Upon opening it, we discovered that the email was coming to us from Zanzibar Blue. According to the announcement:

Zanzibar Blue has long been known as Philadelphia’s premiere jazz club, a fixture on the Avenue of the Arts… But at the end of April, we will be closing our doors as our lease draws to an end. We have nothing but wonderful memories here, and we are sad to be closing this chapter in Zanzibar Blue’s history, but the pulse of jazz beats strongly in Philadelphia. The spirit of Zanzibar Blue will live on.

Phillyist has only been to Zanzibar Blue a handful of times, but we can't help but feel just a little sad at this news. It was one of those places we heard about well before we moved to Philadelphia, so it's just a little weird to think of Philadelphia without it.
