Whiz of the Web: Wednesday Whiz-Up

The best of the internet, squirted out in flavorful neon globules, just for you.

  • SwitchPlanet sounds like a pretty cool little idea. You create a free account, put together a list of things you'd like to trade (like used DVDs, CDs, and video games that you're done with), and then set up free trades with other people on the site. The idea is for people to get more of what they like without having to throw stuff away and create lots of waste. (Via Chris)
  • Check out this new seating design for airplanes that would give everyone even less space and force you to sit closer to, and stare right at the faces of, your fellow passengers. Horrifying! (Via Editor Jill)
  • Those supposed plans to split up Grindhouse into two movies and rerelease it this summer have supposedly been scrapped. So we don't have to rush out to the film in order to see it in its original format. Whew.
  • That new Tolkien book (The Children of Hurin, pieced together by J.R.R.'s son Christopher from his father's manuscripts) was just released yesterday, and they're already talking about making a movie. Well, we'd go see it!
  • Chow Yun-Fat has walked off the set of John Woo's latest film. He claims it's because he was given insufficient time to prepare, but the producer says Yun-Fat's demands were too high and he left because he didn't get what he wanted. Which, frankly, sounds more likely to us.
  • Cinematical's got another Summer preview run-down, with lots of pretty pictures and interesting details, from another major studio; this time it's Fox Searchlight.
  • A while back Phillyist posted a story about Brian Wolf and his unique website, SettleForBrian.com, wherein he requested that some woman lower her expectations and settle for him as their boyfriend. Since then, he's gotten a girlfriend, and now Dinsey's making a movie about his story called Undateable.
  • Van Damme's going to be in a supernatural thriller called Holy Blood that's described as "The Exorcist meets The X-Files." Brilliant! We're not a big fan of Van Damme, but we're really kind of tempted by this one...
  • Want to see some pictures from the new Harry Potter movie? Of course you do. (Via)

  • Will Ferrell is behind a new site called FunnyOrDie, which appears to be kind of a YouTube for comedy videos. And here's a YouTube link to a Will Ferrell comedy short you can find on the site. Enjoy! (Via Download Squad, and Stephen)
  • Video game execs fear your Web 2.0 powahs! Mwa ha ha ha! By which we mean, a new study says that 57% of entertainment industry bigshots list user-generated content as among the top three threats to their business.
  • Fellow Lost fans, a Lost video game is on its way to PS3, Xbox 360, and PC!
  • We're always a little wary of tech devices that try to do a lot of different things at once, and a digital camera that also plays video games seems like a particularly nonsensical combination. We say, no.
  • The British Board of Film Classification has released an interesting study on, of all things, video games. One of their more fascinating conclusions: "negative press coverage for a game will significantly increase its take up." Also, "gamers are 'virtually unanimous in rejecting' the notion that violent games cause real life violence, and that they and gamers they know understand the difference between virtual and real violence." Word. Speaking of violence and video games, have you heard that some idiots are trotting out the old argument about violent games making people do violence to try to explain the Virginia Tech shootings? Joystiq has posted a really cool little declaration that gamers can fill out and send to people to explain to them how wrong this idea is. Also, how insane is it that Rush Limbaugh is the calm voice of reason on this topic??
  • A new Guitar Hero every year?! Yes, please!
  • We have three words for you: Solar Powered Bikini.
  • Here's a cool contest: you could get a walk-on role in the next Marvel Studios movie. Maybe you could get stomped on by the Hulk! Or freak out as Iron Man flies by! And speaking of Marvel superheroes, Sega has just bought up the rights to make games based on three more of them: Captain America, the Hulk, and Thor. Sweet!
  • Having just seen The King of Kong, we couldn't help but link to this news about a big worldwide Pac-Man championship, especially since it includes a picture of, and many references to, famous competetive gamer and star of King of Kong, Billy Mitchell.
