Editor's Note: Due to a scheduling error, this ran yesterday. The event is tonight
Started in 1999 as a collective underground effort to launch DJ Logic, Ropeadope is an online clothing company, indie record label and news source. Tonight, at the World Cafe Live, the launch of Ropeadope Digital, an exclusive label imprint, is being celebrated with performances by BurnDown All Stars, Electric City, and Aunt Jessica.
Ropeadope Digital offers full length albums that are available exclusively through download. All of the bands performing have recently been signed to Ropeadope. On the first Tuesday of every month, the label will release two new recordings.
BurnDown All Stars are a local hip hop group that Phillyist has been obsessed with ever since JAWNZAP7, one of the group's members, entered some songs in Philly Sound Clash earlier this year. At the DiscMakers- and Billboard Magazine-hosted Independent Music World Fest, BurnDown was named the Best Independent Band in the Northeast, and they recently finished taping a reality television battle of the bands tour with Bodog Music. The band is a big crew made up of emcees, musicians and a DJ, whose self-described style is a blend of "hip hop, rock, reggae, Philly soul, groove jam, [and] funk." From the chill, laid back sound of songs like "The Vibes," to the upbeat, mainstream-ready sound of "Dats Dat Shit," the BurnDown All Stars have got something for everyone, and their set tonight is certain to entertain.
Also playing is Electric City, a local duo made up of DJ Skipmode and Mighty Flipside Esq. Skipmode's "battle meets party" style of scratching combines with Mighty Flipside's original, swift flow to create music that sounds a whole lot newer than it is, mainly because it's really good (and a lot of what gets released these days, well, isn't).
Finally, Aunt Jessica, an electronica drum and bass group, will be playing tonight as well. The band doesn't provide much of a description of their sound, and while we can tell you it's good, we were having some trouble coming up with a way to explain it. Enter AllAboutJazz, who aptly writes, "File under: Electronica-what-what-hip-hop-soul-rock-and-shit. The future of all music can be linked to the past and Aunt Jessica is well versed in all tenses[...] Simply put, it's the brand new flavor in your ears." We can't top, or add to, that description, but we do endorse it. So, head over to World Cafe Live tonight, to celebrate Ropeadope's digital label, and watch three great groups take the stage.
