That's right, the Soul Patrol is in town. Not really sure if Philadelphia needs any more soul, but I guess we can decide that tonight. I'll be honest, I am not really a fan of Taylor Hicks. I didn't vote for him nor do I agree with America that he should have won American Idol's Season 5. He's a good performer and singer, just not an "idol" to me. His part of the show should be entertaining with well-performed music even though his newly released album is contrived, boring, and a bit adult-contemporary. It's entitled Taylor Hicks. Original, don't you think? Tonight is really about his opening act, Toby Lightman. This is truly an artist who actually still has some soul in her.
Toby Lightman, a native to Cherry Hill, NJ released her sophomore album, Bird on a Wire, last summer. It's a mix of pop, funk and soul. Her press release states, "USA TODAY named her one of six 'female troubadours worth keeping your eyes, and ears on,' and People Magazine also gave her a glowing review stating, 'On her 2004 debut disc Little Things, Toby Lightman demonstrated that she was no small talent. This rewarding follow-up continues to shine a light on the singer-songwriter's knack for making rich, soulful pop.'"
It's nice to hear some local talent that is making it big. She has toured with many well-known bands, like OAR, Rob Thomas, Jewel, Gavin DeGraw, Train and Prince. This time it's with Taylor Hicks. I fear she might outshine the "real" talent tonight. You be the judge: who has the most soul, Toby or Taylor?

What is it with your blatent disrespect for Taylor. It's his concert and you put Toby's pic up there? And this concert is all about her? I don't think so. Get it right.
In case you didn't notice, Taylor Hicks is headling this tour and Toby is only on for a few dates. He has been selling about 95% of the shows and has gotten rave reviews from critics and fans alike.
Your biased dislike for Taylor is really unprofessional in an article where you are supposed to be previewing.
Taylor's got more soul in his little finger than most artists today have in their whole bodies. Open you ears, and you might be pleasantly surprise, or better yet, attend a show before you make such stupid remarks.
Just to be the editorial voice of reason here, folks: we were contacted by Toby's PR people about covering the show, not by Taylor's. Phillyist actually has a long history of profiling/previewing opening acts, because (a) they're the ones who need the press and (b) they're the ones whose PR people contact us. We technically weren't under any obligation at all to mention Taylor Hicks when we agreed to cover the show.
Now, if you'd like to put Taylor's people in touch with our people, we'd be more than happy to throw some press his way.
Umm...are you guys serious? Are we seriously arguing about American Idol contestants???
Jesus.
95%??? Hard to believe. Last night was barely filled to 50% capacity and that was just on the bottom floor. The balcony was closed.
Taylor is more than an American Idol guy. He is and always has been way beyond that. He puts a lot of veteran artists to shame...IMO. And yes, most of his venues are SOLD OUT!!God forbid Taylor fans are happy about his tour and great reviews!!
