Feel-good concert of the week: NPR’s Classical music program, From the Top, hosted by pianist Christopher O'Riley, returns to the Kimmel Center to showcase the next generation of Philadelphia’s classical musicians. You’ll be sure to leave the hall uplifted and awed.

Thursday
Russian conductor extraordinaire Andrey Boreyko returns to the Philadelphia Orchestra to conduct Stravinsky, Haydn (Il distratto, where the violins tune their lowest string down a step and eventually tune it back up during the piece), and Bartok (The Miraculous Mandarin, based on the adventures of a prostitute and her friends).

Saturday
Orchestra 2001 presents Commemorating an Artist’s Life, featuring works by Ligeti (their theme for the year) and a world premiere by Andrea Clearfield.
Trinity Center (22nd & Spruce); 8 PM; $30
It’s almost like American Idol…. On Friday, the American Composers Orchestra’s Orchestra Underground will play readings of new works by Philadelphia-area’s brightest, emerging composers selected on a competitive basis. On Saturday, the works that pass muster will receive their world premieres.

Philadelphia’s art song series Lyricfest presents American Poets in Song and Letter, featuring the contributions of American poets and composers. Interspersed throughout the program will be commentary by the composers, poets and those who have commissioned works.
First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia (21st and Walnut); 3PM; $15
Formed in 1975 at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, the Takács Quartet (featured above) plays a concert of quartets by Debussy, Shostakovich and Brahms.
