Whiz of the Web: Friday Fried Onions

A steaming hot pile of our favorite things from around the internets.

  • Yay, Apropos of Something is doing a great big, two part comic book-related list! It's the 20 Coolest Superhero Costumes Ever, and part 1 is right here. Part 2 is supposed to show up some time today, so keep an eye out for it.
  • The guy who did School of Rock may be teaming up with the guys who did Shaun of the Dead to make "a conspiracy theory comedy horror movie" called Them. Jack Black may also be involved. Awesome!
  • As linked in Celebrity yesterday, Hong Kong stuntman is claiming that he's doubled for Jackie Chan in some of his Chinese-language films, even though one of Chan's big things is that he does all his own stunts in those films (even if he does use stuntmen in his US films for legal purposes). Chan's spokesman denies the claim, and we're inclined to believe that denial, mainly because the idea that Chan might be secretly using a stuntman is unaccountably disenchanting to us for some reason.
  • Heh heh. That's the only thing we know that song from, too.
  • According to George Lucas, we're supposed to get a trailer and an official title for Indy 4 by Thanksgiving. Also, Harrison Ford will play his age, and apparently Cate Blanchett really is officially in the movie.
  • We always thought offering a much smaller, not as good model of the PS3 at almost the same price as the full model was a pretty lame idea, and now it looks like maybe Sony is coming to that realization as well; the 20GB PS3 is apparently being phased out.
  • Scholastic Inc. says no spoiling or breaking the release date for Harry Potter VII!! They've got strict rules about it for libraries.
  • In case you're interested in how that geeky movie costume/memorabilia auction went recently, Sci Fi Wire has the details. The creature suit from Alien got the biggest bid: $126,500.

  • Time's Nerd World has a pretty great list of The Top 5 All-Time Alternative Supermen. It's all about those different versions of Superman that live in Elseworlds of various sorts. Great stuff. Man, we love Red Son.
  • Is edutainment a failure? Or are people just not using it right? We don't know. All we know is, statistics can be used to say anything. 15% of people know that.
  • Southland Tales is some kind of weird sci-fi, post-apocalyptic, ensemble epic starring The Rock, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Miranda Richardson, Jon Lovitz, Cheri Oteri, Kevin Smith, Wallace Shawn, John Larroquette, and Mandy Moore. A version of it debuted at Cannes last year to a round of boos. Now it's been edited, new special effects are being added in, and it may finally get a real national release some time soon. We have to say, we're curious. But ensemble films do tend to suck...
  • Speaking of boos, a rousing "boo" from horror fans everywhere goes to this freak in London trying to ruin it for everybody by making his own real Freddy Krueger knife gloves and slashing up his "friend" with them.
  • The Philadelphia Film Festival is here, but we hear they have a little one coming up over in Europe called Cannes which is shaping up to be pretty exciting, too. They've got scenes from The Golden Compass, and new movies from folks like the Coen brothers, Woody Allen, Gus Van Sant, and Wong Kar-Wai.
  • Dudes: Edward Gorey movie. It's about time! This'll be an adaptation of The Doubtful Guest, with the creature courtesy Henson's Creature Shop. Awesome!
  • Peter Bogdanovich has made the deal and is now going to try to finish a film that Orson Welles started about 30 years ago: The Other Side of the Wind. It's the story of "an aging director (John Huston) in the midst of an artistic and personal crisis." We love Welles, and Bogdanovich is apparently going to use the footage Welles shot, and add his own, staying as close to Orson's original vision as possible. This should be interesting...
  • Apparently, in a new Italian film, there's a comical scene where a guy meets Jesus in a desert and hands him a Coke to quench his thirst. Jesus likes it! But strangely enough, Coca Cola is demanding the scene be removed from the film. Um... are you saying you don't want free publicity? And you don't want your product to be associated with... Jesus?? Are you insane?!
  • Color-loving Wii owners could soon be able to buy accessories that are not white! Exciting.
