It Only Takes One Song...

We here at Phillyist like to think that we've got pretty good taste in music. (Most of the time, at least.) As such, we also like to think that when we hear a song that really hooks us, we should pass our discovery along to you, our readers.

Our latest discovery came in the form of Gran Bel Fisher's single, "Moment," from his debut album, Full Moon Cigarette. For half a second, we thought we were listening to Chris Isaak. Then, to Lyle Lovett. Then the Old 97's. What we were listening to, instead, was actually a twenty-four year-old singer-songwriter from Ohio, the musical spawn, if not direct descendant, of these three, but with his own unique twist. Though not all of the songs on the album have such heavy rockabilly sensibilities, it's clear to the listener that this is a performer whose style is heavily informed by those who came before him: not in a copycat way, but in a very respectful, engaging one. Full Moon Cigarette is currently streaming in its entirety on Fisher's website, and we've had it on constant rotation in preparation for his show at the World Cafe Live tonight, accompanied by the very talented Lelia Broussard. We get the feeling that if you give the album a listen between now and the show's start time, we'll be seeing you there. It really is that good.
