There's something to be said for a band that can wow without a big, core fan base, and without the bells and whistles that come with a bigger, or not-so-big-but headlining act.
That's what the Cinematics did last night at the TLA. The four boys from Glasgow were pinched together to play in front of the instruments and lights of Mute Math, who headlined. But their solid beats and especially lead singer Scott Rinning's strong vocals literally wowed the crowd. No joke. This Phillyist actually found herself saying "wow" during "Break." Rinning's voice makes you forget all the praise critics have lavished on The Killers' Brandon Flowers. Brandon, we love you, but Rinning's got you beat.
As for Mute Math -- well, remember what we said about bells and whistles? If you have to rely on them, then something's missing. Let's hope the Cinematics are on top next time.
