Okay, so we'll admit, we missed Mixel Pixel's set last night. But check them out - we've heard great things.
We rolled up to the sold out show last night at the Troc just as they were switching props and equipment. And, due to extenuating circumstances, we're going to do something a little unusual for this particular review.
First, let's talk about Of Montreal. We know, they were headlining. And they were wonderful, doing mostly material from their recently released Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? They came out on stage in full regalia, including front man Kevin Barnes, who was in knee-high hosiery, platform shoes and a gold-sequined unisuit. Three white screens bore projections of various photos and changing patterns while the band played most of the new album with more volume, gusto and bravado than they could fit onto the studio version found on the CD.
Our personal favorite song was "heimdalsgate like a Promethean curse," an eerily catchy song about the neurochemistry of happiness. As for the rest of their performance, there was much jumping about and, at one point, even a conga line of sorts. They were good, damn good.
But they were not the better live show of the two acts we caught last night. Make the jump to find out why the photo above isn't of the headlining band...
Enter Grand Buffet. We had never heard of them in our life. When they first came out on stage, we thought they were stage hands.
We were very very mistaken.
These two Pittsburgh natives very literally stole the show from their tour mates. They jumped immediately into a barrage of hilarious and intelligent white-rap genius. With song titles like "Things That Go Hump," "Oh My God You're Weird" and "MURDERFUCK" you can imagine the extent to which we were unprepared for their set.
Rhyming over beats played from a drum machine (which, at one point, took a back seat to Jarod Weeks' exceptional beat boxing capabilities), they discussed everything from the upcoming presidential election to their much-anticipated children's album, Gorilla vs. Fox.
This is definitely a group you need to see before you die. Tune in later to catch our interview with O'Connel-Barlow.
