This Phillyist spent a lot of time at the Electric Factory this weekend, and for a good reason. Friday night, the Scissor Sisters glammed up the place, and on Saturday, Guster brought their cool and uplifting tunes to a packed house.
Could you have had two more different bands or crowds on both nights? Sure -- if, say, Metallica played the day after Yani. Given that this lovely mix of music will probably never happen in one weekend, we'll just focus on what actually took place on Friday and Saturday nights.
The Scissor Sisters took stage on Friday night in all their glam-ness. Male lead singer Jake Shears strutted out in a Mickey Mouse-printed suit and red visor with female lead singer Ana Matronic, who glittered out in a gorgeous shimmery dress. The lyrics would have sent a nun running, but the sold out crowd enjoyed every cheeky minute. We also happened to like Shears' "encore outfit" which he likened to the love child of Liberace and the Crocodile Hunter (though this Phillyist thinks it was more Mummers without the feathers).
The crowd turned more college-y on Saturday night when Guster played to yet another sold out crowd. The band started as a college bar band and found enough of a grassroots following to not only sell out the Electric Factory but also two nights at DC's 9:30 club. In all the times this Phillyist has seen the boys from Beantown, they've never disappointed, and even if they've played some of these songs hundreds of times, the band still kicked it for the Philly crowd. Our favorite part of the show? When drummer Brian Rosenworcel covered 4 Non Blondes' "What's Up" (that song that goes heyyyyyyyyyyaaaaaa yeaaaaaaaaaaaay yeaaaaaaaaaaaaay yeaaaaaaaaaaaay) as the final encore in an hour and a half set. In keeping with the demeanor of the song, Rosenworcel screamed out the lyrics in a good-natured terrible voice that had the whole place laughing. A perfect cap to a feel-good night.

I was totally underwhelmed by the Sisters. Which was sad because they killed it last time they were at the Factory. Felt like something was missing.
But it was still a great party.
