A month ago, Phillyist had never heard of William Elliott Whitmore. But when we saw the press advisory, describing him as a "tattooed, 28 year-old farmer from Iowa who sounds more like a rusty, gritty, world weary 82," and explaining that he has been "touring in between harvests," we figured the guy certainly sounded interesting enough to lend some coverage to. It all sounded so romantic and Grapes of Wrath-y.
Enter our press kit and Whitmore's new album, Song of the Blackbird. This isn't going to be your traditional Church act. It's going to be one man (he's got back-up musicians on the CD, but we can't imagine that he's touring with them), a guitar, and some truly gritty, but still beautiful, bluegrass-inflected blues. Rusty and gritty he certainly is, and we can't wait to see him live on Sunday!
