“Mayor! Now that’s a good idea! I can run for mayor.”

We know we told you about this earlier today, but there's no such thing as too much coverage on a good, or entertaining, story. This promises to be both.

GoldieWilsonRedux.JPGCommon logic dictates that if, mere months ago you were indicted for tax fraud, your chances of winning a mayoral race are slim. Same for if you don’t live in the city where you are seeking office. Or the same state in which that city is located. Or if your brother is the much-maligned outgoing mayor.

Yes, common logic does dictate those things. Unfortunately (or fortunately if you like this sort of political goings-on) T. Milton Street Sr. doesn’t feel common logic applies to him and announced his candidacy for Mayor of Philadelphia at city hall on Wednesday. At high noon, no less.

From the Daily News:

According to Daily News City Hall bureau chief Mark McDonald, Street says he's motivated by a desire to fight the easy availablity of guns. He also said he believes candidate Dwight Evans should not run for mayor, but stay in Harrisburg to help support gun legislation.

As for the pesky matter of his recent federal indictment for tax fraud? He said he didn't know why that would be an issue, since, in his words, he hasn't done anything wrong. He pointed out that he hasn't been convicted of anything.

Maybe this is a play to ingrain himself in the local conscience because of the recent Navy Yard shootings. Maybe he's finally snapped. What's the over under on how many days it takes until we see the "Milton Street Face?" This campaign is going to be a great source of humor to get us all through this cold, cold February. Get some popcorn and enjoy the political circus. Phillyist can't wait.

And seriously, cleaning up the gun violence in Philadelphia is a damn good idea. The running total on the PW blog is totally depressing.
