Yo, Philly in the News

  • Our next mayor might not have a bachelor's degree. This would make him a rarity amongst the current mayors of the largest cities in America, and even a rarity amongst past mayors of Philadelphia, at least since the '50s. However, it would put him in good company with four-fifths of the city's adult population. So, the question is, does it matter?
  • Now it's coming out that Reid's sons have gotten into traffic accidents before and there have been few legal consequences. Are they being shown favoritism?
  • Philly now has two illegal gun hotlines: 215-683-GUNS (set up by the Street administration in 2003) and 215-546-TIPS (announced last Friday by "U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah and state Sen. Vincent Hughes, along with the Citizens Crime Commission of the Delaware Valley"). They both work pretty much the same way: leave an anonymous tip about an illegal gun, and if the police find it and make an arrest, you get some money. The only difference is in the amount of money; the former hotline could make you as little as $250 with a $1,000 maximum, while the newer one will mean a flat $1,000.
  • Speaking of crime-fighting measures, looks like the city will be spending lots more money on surveillance cameras soon, but Mayor Street wants us to know they won't be abused by police, and that "community people" will also be involved in monitoring them. For some reason, in this same article we learn that the City Council is considering looking into replacing the city's cement sidewalks with cheaper, easier to maintain rubber ones, which are "tree-root friendly and made from recycled tires." Crazy.

Awesome! Now I can bounce to work.

Not to disparage the idea of rewarding for tips on illegal guns, but if you leave an anonymous tip and they can find you to give you a reward... how anonymous was that exactly?

Jeremy: I was wondering about that myself! I guess you must have to leave some type of contact information along with your tip, so yeah, it can't be entirely anonymous. But I guess it is "anonymous" in so far as the officials won't broadcast your name and personal information.

I love alternative sidewalk pavings as much (probably more) than the next person, but what does that have to do with Philly News?

Laine: You're kidding, right? Tell me you're kidding. Allow me to quote from my post above:

"...the City Council is considering looking into replacing the city's cement sidewalks with cheaper, easier to maintain rubber ones, which are 'tree-root friendly and made from recycled tires.'"

That's the PHILLY City Council. Of PHILLY. Who are thinking of changing the PHILLY sidewalk paving from cement to rubber. The sidewalk that we walk on while we're in PHILLY. So...Philly news. Right?
