Giving Back Some Brotherly Love: Channel Your Inner Tech Geek

Where Phillyist works (probably like many of you, dear readers), computers are essential. When being online all day is part of your job it's easy to forget that many people do not have access to the Internet or the skills to use it, much less the hardware on which to browse it. The Non-Profit Technology Resources is addressing this, and you can help. The NTR provides low-income Philadelphia residents with recycled computers, providing hands-on training for individuals, and assisting community-based organizations to incorporate computers into their work.

This Saturday, the NTR Thrift Shop needs help sorting and organizing donated equipment at their Fairmount Area location. This project is organized through Greater Philadelphia Cares, a group of which Phillyist is very fond. Because it is organized through GP Cares, you'll need to attend a one-hour orientation prior to jumping in and sorting peripherals to your heart's content. The good news is there's an orientation scheduled tomorrow night in Center City, and there's still room for you. Contact Frankie at GP Cares (or give a call at 215-564-4544). Once you attend the session, you can volunteer for GP Cares projects with impunity.

If you can't make it on Saturday, NTR also needs volunteers to sort for February 17th. If you're free during business hours, you can check out other opportunities on the NTR website. And if you have any hard drives hanging around gathering dust, consider sending them up their way.

I believe that if you call ahead, they will also take your old computers and monitors and accessories off of your hands. As it's actually illegal to throw those out in the garbage, and it can be a real pain getting to one of the local county-sponsored hazardous waste disposal sites on the few days that they're open to the public, this is a really valuable resource for uncluttering your home or office.
