rsz_1rsz_meridian.jpgSigh…. Wouldn’t it be nice if the Philadelphia Orchestra could stay out of the orchestral gossip articles? Regardless, it, along with some gossip-free groups, have some great concerts coming up.

Tuesday
The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society presents pianist Claude Frank in an all-Schubert recital. This Curtis faculty member will also give a free Master Class in Temple’s Rock Hall at 2:40 PM.
American Philosophical Society (427 Chestnut St.); 8 PM; $22


Wednesday
The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society also presents the Johannes Quartet, a Marlboro Festival-born chamber ensemble. Their program includes quartets by Mozart and Schubert, as well as a gorgeous late quartet by Beethoven. Be sure to catch the free pre-concert lecture at 6:45 PM.
Pennsylvania Convention Center Auditorium; 8 PM; $22

Thursday
Listen to the aforementioned Philadelphia Orchestra, under the skilled baton of Russian-native Vladimir Jurowski as he conducts works by such Russian composers as Stravinsky and Rachmaninoff.
Verizon Hall (Kimmel Center); 8 PM, Friday, 2 PM, Saturday, 8 PM; $10-$123

Friday
Venetian flutist Daniele Ruggieri presents a solo recital as part of Haverford’s Music and Conversation Series.
Roberts Hall, Marshall Auditorium (Haverford College); 4 PM; FREE

The all-brass Meridian Arts Ensemble, as part of the PCMS series, presents a truly varied program from Sanford to Villa-Lobos. If you’re off work early, try to catch their master class at 2:40 PM in Temple’s Rock Hall.
Philadelphia Museum of Art; 8 PM; $16

Still want more Villa-Lobos? You’re in luck! The Philadelphia Chamber Ensemble will play works by him and composers from all over the world in their winter concert.
Old Pine Street Church, 412 Pine Street; 8 PM (also Sunday at 2 PM); $25 (includes post-concert reception)

Sunday (Don’t worry, these concerts will leave you plenty of time to get home for the big kickoff)
The Mahler 4 graces Verizon Hall once more this year, this time as played by the Curtis Symphony Orchestra. Joining the Mahler will be a world premier of Sessler’s Organ Concerto as well as Respighi’s Pini di Roma.

The German Society of Pennsylvania presents the Wister Quartet in a concert of
the German (Brahms, Beethoven) and the not-so-German Paganini. If you’re not in too much of a hurry home, stay for a brief reception and meet the artists.
