Besides offering a concise and appropriate representation of the times, some quotes are so incisive that they make a step back from the clarity of the moment nearly impossible.
“The Iranian government should remember what is happening in China. Nearly 30 thousand people are currently employed to control Chinese weblogs."
- Iranian blogger's response to new laws requiring websites and blogs to be registered with the government
When the people in Tehran think you're worse off, it's clearly time to reevaluate the situation. Fortunately though, the bloggers in China are just as pissed as their Iranian counterparts and they will continue to remain defiant despite a call by their president for further regulations on the web.
Interwoven with this issue, has been that of the part played by American companies, such as Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo. Besides restricting access to forbidden information in compliance with Chinese law, all of these companies have turned over information that has led to the prosecution and jailing of dissidents. It is certainly more beneficial to have these companies operating in China than kept outside for not obeying local laws. For instance, disparities between our Google platform and Google.cn can raise enough eyebrows about censorship, that is, if the user is able to access both, as some reports state that the US Google platform was only available in China for a month last year. But, it is tough to stomach the gradual advances being made by these companies while they contribute to blatant human rights violations. It is somewhat promising that they recently agreed to new codes of conduct. Human Rights Watch and Reporters Without Borders were two of the groups that comprised the panel that drew up the guidelines. Of course, we'll have to wait and see, but bloggers everywhere can feel a little bit better.
Anyone who attended this past week's Chinese New Year Spectacular at the Merriam Theater might be aware of the organizers' long time fight against censorship in China.
For a while, New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV) transmitted the only uncensored news feed to China. After the French based satelite company Eutelsat refused to renew their contract in 2005, NTDTV could no longer reach mainland viewers. Certainly though, they have carried on the fight, thus continuing to irritate the Chinese government, which explains why there are no stops to the homeland (depending on whether or not you count Taiwan) on their 29 city world tour. If you're upset about missing the tour, jump on the Chinatown bus and head down to D.C. where they're playing tonight and tomorrow. Or you can head to The Big Sexy, NYC, where NTDTV headquarters is located, to catch them from Feb. 14th to the 17th.

Across the Ist-a-Verse

Is phillyist ever going to write about Philly? Ever?
Building going up everywhere , what maybe two of the only real alt papers left. A burgeoning music scene, a really good academic town, amazing food, interesting and convoluted politics, spoken word artists out the rear, and......
Little to NONE of it shows up here . Unless it's filtered through facebook, myspace,or listservs first.
Wanna write for the economist go do it, but if I read one article here that doesn't slag on Philly or revolve on how ever so clever someone writing it believes themself to be and how quickly they prove otherwise. I'll laugh my fat , no style having, must be a creating cause I LIKE this city ASS OFF
Stop crying. I was writing an add-on before you dropped by.
And speaking of trying to be clever- try typing with two hands. What the hell was that last paragraph?
anon was a little harsh, but she has a point. this post has less to do with philly than most posts on this site.
The add-on just went through. Let me know what you think.
So...you didn't like the add-on?
So....I thought this was the Phillyist, not the Chinaist. Maybe you should do some investigation and see if Beijing would be interested in an IST site.
Brion is turning Phillyist into his personal blog, I see.
i don't know what you guys are talking about. This is a very important post about blogger freedom and LIBERTY. ARE WE NOT AMERICANS?
Why is this brave man who is posting about SAVING LIVES being bashed? Oh, because he didn't say I love cheesesteaks! in the post? Shame on you people. This is why I hate LIEberals--only concerned about themselves and not stopping terrorism.
Phillyist is pretty useless for local news, compared to the other -ists. Maybe it's time for Jake to do a Miamist (Miamiist?) and pull the plug on it.
LAist also had a problem with one of the contributors trying to turn it into his own personal blog/soapbox over Christmas. That thankfully died down.
Miamist wasn't put on hiatus because it wasn't local. Miamist was put on hiatus because it wasn't active. Thanks for your kind words, though. We really appreciate your positive attitude.
i can't believe that not only did the editor of this site ask people to bash this post, but the comment revealing that was deleted from this site. THE EDITOR OF THIS SITE TOLD PEOPLE TO SAY THIS POST SUCKS.
I love Phillist. It's hilarious.
wow the editor of this site is now censoring comments too.
oh nevermind my comment go thru. no censoring here, my apologies for saying that! i LOVE PHILLYIST
Hi folks,
I was reading the nice comment about NTDTV and the Spectacular. NTDTV won the battle with Eutelstat. :) NTDTV's signal broadcasts throughtout Asia and China, enabling all who have a satellite dish (there are at least 40 million in China) to see uncensored news and true cultural programming. The network also now carries some English programming. For more info:

thanks!
Phil, thanks for the update and for your comments. I couldn't find anything past 2005 and the last article I found stated that it was to be shut down. Though the site you reffered mentions that it is currently running, the site seems as though it could be outdated. Could you point me to a recent article on the subject? Much appreciated.

i just saw a podcast on this issue at the above link. it is about a young chinese dude with a hip webcast. he has gotten away with making fun of every issue from corruption to a failing education system in china. also it describes a system called "freenet" which is being developed to make it near impossible to censor and identify users. sounds hopeful! it will be more than interesting to see how the chinese gov will deal with a massive number of internet loving young people and systems like freenet that will protect their anonymity. (btw. what is all the controversy about? blogger dude, beware the phillyist secret police. recant this moment of infidelity. quickly confess your devotion to the eagles and cheesesteaks.) peace and love to ya. fyi, rocky is #1 in the uk right now! o yeah!
Yeah, how could censorship issues be relevant to a blogging site?! I don't get it either?! BTW,
there were some old ladies recently protesting the 'chairman' in Chinatownn this past weekend.
Way to go Ah-ma!
