Weekly Classical Music Agenda

rsz_rsz_Tokyo.jpg… and we’re back! Classical music is in full swing this week. From Vivaldi to Ligeti, Philly is popping with all sorts of concerts, including two Philadelphia premieres and several free concerts.

Tuesday
AVA continues with Von Weber’s magical Der Freischütz.
Perelman Theater, Kimmel Center; 7:30 PM; $48

Thursday
The Juilliard-bred Tokyo Quartet presents a program of delightful works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Debussy. Be sure not to miss the free pre-concert lecture.
Perelman Theater, Kimmel Center; 8 PM; $22

After making a surprise (and perhaps controversial) switch from Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder to Vivaldi's Four Seasons, the Philadelphia Orchestra presents the Four Seasons as regularly scheduled.
Verizon Hall, Kimmel Center; Thursday, Friday 8 PM; $38-$113

Friday
Wallets still feeling the holiday burn? Local string quartet Liebesfreud pairs up with cellist Vivian Dozor to present Schubert’s glorious Cello Quintet as part of the free "Last Fridays" concert series.
Philadelphia Ethical Society (Rittenhouse Square); 5:30 PM; FREE

Always looking for the next new thing? The acclaimed Lions Gate Trio will play the Philadelphia premiere of Temple faculty member Richard Brodhead’s “Es ist genug.”
Rock Hall, Temple University; 7:30 PM; FREE

For those classical guitar buffs out there, Emanuel Segre comes to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to give a solo recital of Bach and other favorites.
Philadelphia Museum of Art; 8 PM; $22

Saturday
Irish and non-Irish alike will enjoy an Evening of Story & Song with Danny O'Flaherty. This “simple bard” will perform everything from songs of Galway fishermen, to aching ballads, love songs, and even some rollicking folk shanties.
Philadelphia Ethical Society (Rittenhouse Square); 8 PM; $20 at door or call 215-338-3776

Tempesta di Mare presents yet another interesting baroque program, The Fantastic Herr Fasch - A Genius Rediscovered. A contemporary of Bach, Johann Friedrich Fasch has been both forgotten and lost over the years, meriting revivals and modern world premieres
St. Mark’s Church (16th and Locust); 8 PM; FREE

Sunday
Ever hear a soprano and flute duel to the tune of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star?" Now is your chance. With an incredibly diverse program, the 2001 Orchestra still delivers such classics as Mozart’s flashy Ch’io mi scordi te in their program From Mozart to a World Premiere. Not to be overlooked are Ligeti’s Bagatelles or the Philadelphia premiere of Augusta Read Thomas’ In My Sky at Twilight.
Trinity Center (22nd and Spruce); 3 PM; $30
