The early winter lull is almost over. There are certainly some interesting concerts this week, but the real winter season is on hold for another week.

Catch AVA’s concert version of Von Weber’s (pictured at left) Der Freischütz, an opera that explores what happens when peasants and magic collide.

Like Ives? Violinist Soovin Kim and pianist Jeremy Denk will play a program of all Ives violin sonatas.

Gerard Schwarz conducts the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra in a program of lesser-known orchestral gems, including de Falla’s El amor brujo, a passionate work peppered with gypsy tunes and Andalusian folk songs.

It sure pays to have lots of musical friends. As part of Curtis’ Alumni Recital Series, Daniel Matsukawa, principal bassoon of the Philadelphia Orchestra, joins friends (including Philadelphia Orchestra’s Christoph Eschenbach on piano) in a benefit concert for current Curtis students.

The German Society of Pennsylvania presents the Philadelphia Trio in a delightful program of works by Mozart and Brahms.
