Whiz of the Web: Thirsty Thursday

A tall, icy glass of our favorite internet junk, just for you.

  • Just in time for Christmas, Slate gifts us with a totally surreal and fascinating article on a DaVinci Code-type conspiracy theory featuring Christ, the Vatican, and a holy relic - although perhaps not quite the kind of relic you might expect. In fact, the article asks the question just what really happened to the foreskin of Jesus? Or, as it is apparently also known, the "Holy Prepuce" (a phrase this Phillyist found particularly amusing, as our dog Floyd is just getting over an infection of his prepuce). (Via)
  • Speaking of penises, the avatar of Second Life millionaire Ailin Graef was pelted with virtual ones by an unknown assailant during an in-game interview at CNET's offices. Luckily for us, Something Awful somehow acquired pictures and video of the event, which are obviously not entirely SFW.
  • Turns out that new visual style of Betty & Veronica that we were so disgusted by was just a little experiment and will never be seen again if the fans don't like it (and we don't see how they could, so we guess we're all safe).
  • Yay, it's Google Zeitgeist time again! We're obviously completely out of touch with the spirit of this year, though, because we ironically had to google Google's top search term for 2006 ("bebo") to figure out WTF it is (apparently it's another one of those online community things - boring!). We find it amusing and kind of sad that the top word people wanted the definition of was "promiscuous" and the top Google News search term was "paris hilton." (Number two on Google News was "orlando bloom" - maybe they'll be a couple next year.) (Via)
  • A sad consequence of illiteracy that few people consider is that you can't do karaoke.

More after the jump...

  • So, Sony Computer Entertainment's new chairman and group CEO is going to turn everything around and take the company to new and better places, right? Uh, not so much. He wants to put out an even more expensive, AV-centric PS3 that would have a bigger power supply, an anti-shake insulator, and more memory. Um...oh boy. You mean there will be another PS3, probably even harder to find, that we could waste even more of our money on, and that we would be able to...shake, if we wanted to? Can't wait.
  • Forbes has an interesting article about just where each dollar goes of the 60 bucks you put into buying a next gen video game. (Via)
  • Premiere magazine has for us The 20 Most Overrated Movies of All Time. We definitely agree with some of their picks (Easy Rider is dated, dull, and ridiculously melodramatic; 2002's Chicago is just okay; and, although we haven't seen Jules and Jim, we hate the French New Wave, so we're with them there, too), but sorry, Clerks, Field of Dreams, The Red Shoes, and Moonstruck are all legitimately awesome movies. (Via)
  • Have we got some trailers for you! First, Shooter (via), which features Mark Wahlberg as a retired expert sniper who's brought in to do a job by Danny Glover's character, only to find he's been set up, and must turn the tables on his pursuers in order to survive. Looks familiar, but fun. Next up is Ocean's 13 (via), which looks just as stylish and fun as the previous two installments. Plus, besides having all the old boys back, it also stars Al Pacino! Sweet. Third we have the long-awaited trailer for Transformers (via), which, as you might expect, is pretty awesome. Finally, since we linked you to iFilm's worst trailers of the year yesterday, it's only right we also link you to iFilm's Best Trailers of 2006 today. (Via)
  • And finally, we leave you with a list from Cinematical of 7 Comic Book Movies for People Who Hate Super Heroes. We don't hate super heroes, but this is still a pretty good list (we especially appreciate the inclusion of the fantastic Road to Perdition). One recommendation, however: if you do decide to watch Danger: Diabolik, try to find the "Mystery Science Theater 3000" version. It's far, far more entertaining.

Shooter was shot largely in Philly. I was supposed to work as an extra for a day but it poured, so I stayed home. A few days after that, we got an email from our CFO telling us not to worry, there was no SWAT team surrounding our building, but rather, they were shooting a movie and had permission to fly down JFK, at a pretty low altitude. Exciting to see the previews now.
