Whiz of the Web: Wednesday Whiz-Up

The best of the internet, squirted out in flavorful neon globules, just for you.

  • Heh. Lois Lane is a total whore.
  • So what's the first thing aliens will see when they inevitably approach Earth, curious to discover what type of creatures inhabit this tiny blue planet in the middle of nowhere? The smiling face of Colonel Sanders, that's what! That's right, KFC is now the proud owner of the first logo visible from outer space - a giant Colonel Sanders face made out of tiles in the Nevada desert, appropriately right near the mysterious Area 51. • Another reason not to like Wal-Mart: they were recently selling (or perhaps still are selling, depending on how fast they are at taking things off their shelves) a T-shirt decorated prominently with the skull insignia of the Nazi 3rd SS Division Totenkopf. Of course, when folks at the company learned what they'd done - via a blog, of all things - they immediately issued the order to remove the shirts, and officially apologized, claiming they would never have put the shirt out if they knew what it meant. But who designed the shirt in the first place? Here's some baseless conjecture on that very topic. And btw, before you blame it all on the designer, you should know this isn't the first time Wal-Mart has been connected to Nazis. (Via)
  • The next movie from Neil Marshall, director of The Descent, is going to be a futuristic action thriller called Doomsday. It's about a virus called the Reaper, which humanity thought they were done with when the country that was infected was walled off. But when the virus resurfaces, an elite team must infiltrate the walled country to find a cure. One of the stars of The Descent, Rhona Mitra, has just signed on to play the leader of the team.
  • Oh, Married to the Sea. Sometimes, you are so very wrong.
  • As editor Jill already pointed out in the comments to yesterday's Whiz, the story about Eva Longoria and Beyonce doing the nasty together on the big screen is sadly just somebody's wishful thinking. Sigh.

More after the jump...

I'm afraid that you're entirely incorrect -- Rhona Mitra (the original model for the body and voice of Lara Croft, incidentally) was not in The Descent.

I got that information from the SciFi.com article that I linked to there, so I assumed I could trust it. However, a check of the IMDB pages for The Descent and Rhona Mitra suggests you are correct, and that she was not in the movie. I've altered the post accordingly. Thanks, Mike.

I can't believe I can't trust SciFi.com about Sci-fi movies. What's up with that?

That Wal-Mart thing is really a stretch. Any t-shirt store on South Street will have the same thing or even worse. But I guess it's different when it's a big company? There are plenty of legit reasons to criticize Wal-mart, no need to cheapen the argument by something dumb like this.

Drew: I think it does definitely make a difference when it's a company like Wal-Mart, who are so huge, and claim to be such a beacon for cleanliness and goodness, what with refusing to sell CDs with dirty lyrics for fear of hurting the children and so forth. Comparing Wal-Mart to some T-shirt store on South Street is like comparing a gigantic, self-righteous apple to a tiny orange.

And yes, there are plenty of legit reasons to criticize Wal-Mart, and it seems to me the fact that they'd sell T-shirts with Nazi insignia on them is another one of those.

According to the article, they didn't even know it was a Nazi symbol, and they removed all the shirts right away. Again, I'm not a huge W-M fan, but I don't see how they're to blame for this, and it's certainly not some kind of damning evidence that they support Nazis or some such nonsense.

Drew: It's true, they didn't appear to know what it was; they did remove the shirts right away; and this certainly doesn't prove that they're run by Nazis or anything like that. But I don't think you can excuse them of ALL blame in this incident. I mean, shouldn't they take a look at what's on their shirts before they put them out for sale? I'm just saying is all.
